Heroes – S01E07 – Nothing To Hide

nov102006_906.jpgTonight, it’s Chapter 7: Nothing to Hide

I’m really hoping that this week’s show kicks the story back into gear.

I found last week somewhat plodding. I definitely didn’t feel the jolt of momentum that I had felt in the previous six episodes. Usually, after the show ends I’ve got a buzz going and am excited about the possibilities yet to come. Last week it was “eh.” Maybe I just don’t like that kid.

Another problem I had with last week’s show was the introduction of Niki’s husband as a major character. I think they’ve got enough in the way of major characters at this point. It’s getting hard to juggle everyone’s storylines. On the other hand, lots of major characters sometimes leads to meaningful deaths.

So… apparently I hate kids and am looking forward to death scenes. It must be Monday.

Comments

  1. Hehehehe…I bought a brand new 37″ HD TV for this show!!! I cannot wait to see it in HD!!!

  2. Okay, that was much better!

  3. That was a great episode. They’re moving through plot like an overgrown lawn.

What’s the deal with the FBI lady? Is she just too young for the part, or a bad actor, or just has bad dialog? Cuz something ain’t right.

Also, apparently that kid will grow up to be: THE REPAIRMAN!

    Or Mayor Hundred.

  4. Or Anakin Skywalker II.

Now that’s a super nerdy reference if there ever was one.

  5. Wow. HD is AMAZING!!!

That episode was good. I feel like story is progressing well. Given that they got a full season out of it I wonder what adaptations they made with the script.

Did they slow it down? Add more, etc? Just thinking out loud.

  6. or Forge good to see some non traditional powers represented

  7. I thought this week was a lot better than last week, but honestly, I still find the pacing a bit slow. To some degree they seem to be having that team book thing, too many characters to get really deep with any. I don’t as yet feel all that connected to any one of them.

But, as Conor said, plenty of room for spectacular deaths..

  8. I went to bed early last night so I won’t get to see this until late tonight so I am predictably annoyed by that.
Now I haven’t seen the episode yet but

What’s the deal with the FBI lady? Is she just too young for the part, or a bad actor, or just has bad dialog? Cuz something ain’t right.

Are you talking about Clea DuVall? Dude she’s the shit. She was Sofie in Carnivale and she was in Girl Interrupted and But I’m a Cheerleader(which I recommend to EVERYONE it’s a really great movie that nobody has ever seen practically). She’s got a lifetime Fred pass for those roles. I give out very few of these and they’re very rarely revoked. Woody Harrelson is the last person I can remember doing it to. Natural Born Killers was so great that I actually forgave him for White Men Can’t Jump. Then I suffered through EdTv and a few others and said: ‘eh, it’s woody harrelson though. he was in natural born killers.’ This all ended with Play It To The Bone. I’m really bizarrely OCD when it comes to watching a movie once I’ve begun it (also why I always wait to long to drop books). Play It To The Bone was so bad that I walked out of the theatre. One of only two times in my life. But Clea DuVall has way more cred than he ever did so there’s no way that she’s gone bad yet.

For anyone interested, the other movie I left was She’s All That. No no let me explain. I went to the drive-in with my wife to see a movie that we wanted to see really bad. No I can’t remember what it was. She’s all that was first. We wanted to see the second movie so badly that we just said fuck it how bad can it be? Holy shit I had no idea. We left during the action volleyball sequence. It was like the 80’s with C Thomas Howell all over again. And that whole take suntanning pills so you can get a united negro college fund scholarship thing never worked for me so fuck him.

That was really random and odd. I am strangely impressed by anyone who has made it to this point in my post. You are to be commended. or institutionalized. your choice

  9. I just realized that I never go to the drive in anymore because of the crowds and the drunk 17 year olds. I used to be a drunk 17 year old. Getting older sucks

  10. I agree, Clea DuVall is awesome on this show and in general and at 29 is not too young to be an FBI agent (I’d assume – I don’t know FBI requirements).

    There are still drive-ins?

  11. … but honestly, I still find the pacing a bit slow.

I couldn’t disagree more, but then I guess that’s what makes life interesting! 🙂

  12. There are still drive-ins?

Indeed, they are dying and nobody seems to be building new ones but they do still exist out in the rustic areas of our shared state. There are actually 4 within 45 minutes drive of my house which seems like a lot because I’ve heard that there are only something like 200 left in the country. It’s awesome, if you don’t mind the crowds and drunk kids, you can get a whole carload of people in to see 2 movies for like $10.

Speaking of rustic, there is one in my area that actually has a trough rather than urinals. I swear to God that I’m not that creative and I couldn’t make that up. Like you are literally suppossed to stand around with 5 or 6 other guys and piss as a group into what looks like a bathtub. Very odd. And I literally live less than 10 minutes from Albany, our fine capital city. And about 2-2.5 hours out of nyc. You are that close to pissing with strangers in a glorified outhouse in the middle of a field full of cars.

  13. I couldn’t disagree more, but then I guess that’s what makes life interesting! 🙂
Actually midgets and lap dances make life interesting, this just gives all of us something to talk about

  14. Another episode and I still think that Niki’s evil side is going to be, in fact, on the side of evil in this story.

  15. I was liking it, but Clea DuVall, who I love (she was great in Carnivale and I echo the “you must watch But I’m a Cheerleader” sentiment) but the dialogue that she had in this episode was tired and cliched obsessed cop.

I really loved Hiro’s part in this episode. Very small, but it’s interesting seeing how the characters end up interacting.

And I have a feeling that eventually we’re going to see the politician’s wife have powers. Don’t know why.

It’s interesting at this point because you can speculate who is actually going to be a hero and who isn’t. We don’t know how it will all pan out in the end, especially with the family of powers.

I dig the show. They’re weaving interesting characters and plotlines together.

  16. So this thought hit me during the episode, and it’s slightly spoilerish so I’ll leave some white space . . .

We’ve been approaching the heroes as a super team, but why not the villains too? I could easily see Nathan going dark, and Nikki/Jessica’s most of the way there. We’ve got Syler (however it’s spelled) running around, and there’s room for a few more. We’ve been waiting for the good guys to get together, but what about a powerful group for evil? I especially think it’d be great for the Nathan/Peter dynamic, and it remains to be seen whose side Claire’s dad is on. Just a thought.

    End Spoilerishness.

  17. Heroes
    Whose side are you on?
An epic struggle of brothers, parents, and children

  18. I’m on MY SIDE!!!

  19. If the kid is Forge, would that make his Mother She-Hulk and his father Kitty Pryde?

    Lawd gawd.

  20. I love me some Clea DuVall.
And as much as I love me some Ali Larter I can’t wait for her arc to be over.

  21. Clea DuVall might be great in whatever else, but (and I’m willing to blame the script) her lines in this are awful. She’s so rote and cliched. I don’t change my position!

Also, I hear that next week, Ali Larter will develop the power to close her mouth all the way. It’s not gonna be easy…

  22. I disagree! 🙂

  23. And that’s just the first time today!

  24. every group of people needs their very own william blake

  25. So is the Radioactive Man the atomic bomb that goes off in New York? And did they just steal the whole ‘gives his wife cancer’ from the Hulk or what?

The show is rock solid though. I have loved every episode–my wife, who is not a comic person, has even gotten very into it, as well.

In my opinion, they need to take a page from some shows in Europe–instead of trying to have the thing on for 10 years and stretch it all out, give 2 or 3 years of great stuff and then bring it to an end.

By the way, I’ve got a cousin in the FBI and he was an agent well before age 29.

  26. In my opinion, they need to take a page from some shows in Europe–instead of trying to have the thing on for 10 years and stretch it all out, give 2 or 3 years of great stuff and then bring it to an end.

There’s way too much money to be made by way too many people for that to ever happen.

By the way, I’ve got a cousin in the FBI and he was an agent well before age 29.

    Vindication!

  27. Is your cousin a hot blond chick who speaks in bad dialog?

  28. BAM!!! COUSIN BURN

  29. Studio 60 news
Cancel the Funeral: ‘Studio 60’ Isn’t Heading Off Into the Sunset Just Yet

Studiosixty Despite the assurances from those in-the-know around the blogosphere that the struggling freshman NBC hour “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” was mere hours away from cancellation with its low ratings and extravagant $2 million-per-episode pricetag, the opposite now in fact appears to be true. While not yet official, key industry sources are confident that NBC will, in the next few days, announce the show’s pickup for its back nine episodes (giving it a full season complement of 22) in the wake of two consecutive Mondays of upwardly-trending numbers.

I chatted this morning with its producer and chief writer Aaron Sorkin, who thought that word of the show’s fate could come as soon as today but likely not until week’s end or — at latest — next Tuesday. It’s thought that NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly was desperately searching for an excuse to renew “Studio 60” — any sign of life that would indicate even modest traction — and unofficial word is the show’s performance over the past two Mondays has supplied it.

“I’d be very surprised at this point if the show weren’t picked up (for the full season) in the next couple of days,” noted one source who requested anonymity.

This is naturally music to Sorkin’s ears, which have had to endure a running stream of pessimistic pronouncements and predictions over the show’s fate since the day after it premiered. Critics, after all, love nothing more than tearing down that which they have built up with glowing praise, particularly when it comes from the writing/production stable of a brand name like Sorkin.

“Hopefully soon people will start paying attention to the show instead of who’s making it,” Sorkin told me today. “I really look at it as just the cost of doing business. I knew the reaction to the show was going to be a little bit noisier than I’d prefer. But hopefully, we’re finally settling in and the audience is seeing the amazing cast and acknowledges the great, committed group of people who are behind this show.”

Sorkin insisted that due to the last two weeks of ratings results “we’re starting to feel optimistic around here” and reminds us that “The West Wing” also wasn’t a hit in its first season. That didn’t come until season two.

“But I’m much more comfortable with this feeling (of struggle),” Sorkin said. “It feels like it did when I did ‘Sports Night.’ ‘West Wing’ felt starnge to me. This feels normal.”

While Sorkin is now confident that the call confirming “Studio 60’s” back nine renewal could come any day or hour, he’s also convinced that the show’s measurement isn’t reflective of its actual viewership.

“The Wall Street Journal wrote that when you add in people who TiVo our show and watch it later, our audience grows 18%,” he said. “That’s almost a full fifth larger. But those people don’t get counted and advertisers don’t care, because the assumption is TiVo viewers forward through the commercials. But that’s still a very significant number for us. It would add close to two rating points to our total. People watch TV differently than they used to, and to be accurate the ratings need to begin taking that into account.”

  30. Josh, you think that Clea DuVall is hot?

I think she’s an amzing actress (agreed with the bad dialogue), but she’s not very hot.

  31. “Hot” is relative. But in terms of every day people, and goverment civil servants, she’s pretty up there in terms of attractiveness, as are most people on TV, granted. I’m guessing she’s put together pretty well compared to most FBI field agents.

  32. Yeah I’m not really that into her either. I don’t think she’s a hideous beast or anything either but definitely not hot.

  33. “Hot” is relative. But in terms of every day people, and goverment civil servants, she’s pretty up there in terms of attractiveness, as are most people on TV, granted. I’m guessing she’s put together pretty well compared to most FBI field agents.

I could get behind that sure. She is very likely way hotter than the average clerk at the dmv

  34. I think she’s “unconventionally hot”, which I dig.

I also bet she’s more attractive in person.

  35. I’m waaaaaaay into Ms. DuVall.
Rent But I’m a Cheerleader someday.
    Yes. She’s hot. Unconventionally, yeah.

  36. Sorry, Josh, but HE is a slightly overweight Hispanic in his early 40’s–if that is your thing, than yes, he is hot. His dialogue is pretty everyday/natural.

  37. He’s a pretty good looking dude. Uh-oh, Ron is gonna think I’m weird now…..

  38. I feel sad saying this, but it burdens my soul: to me, Clea Duvall will always first and foremost be the invisible girl from season one of Buffy.

  39. that was the episode where everyone’s worst fear was coming true right? She felt ignored by everyone so she actually became invisible. That was awesome. I miss that corny corny show

  40. So, Clea DuValls powers are: getting very hot or turning into a Hideous Beast?.

Also, great show, but as much as I like the “Seinfeld strategy” of a very small world where everyone knows each other, Im starting to “resent” (i dont know if thats the proper word) the fact that everyone who has powers is related to each other and meet casually so quick and convenient.

I think they started this very subtly but now is getting kinda forced. All thats missing its Kevin Bacon and we could have ourselves a game.
