Happy Holidays from iFanboy!

Just wanted to take a moment and wish everyone a very happy and safe holiday season, no matter what you celebrate, we hope it rocks.

In the spirit of Christmas, we found this collection of depictions of Santa in comics from Fred Hembeck. Thanks to the fine folks at Rocketship in Brooklyn for the link.

The Punisher Santa is my favorite.

  6. happy holidays ifanboy community, and may santa or hanukah harry bring you all absolute new frontier. or onslaught reborn if you’be been naughty.

  7. There is nothing that annoys me more than someone championing the ‘holiday season’. Maybe it is an English thing, but Christmas should be a holiday that anyone, regardless of faith can enjoy; a celebration not of religious origin but something that unites people of all faiths and beliefs in care-free merriment.

In England this is the first year that we have significantly felt the legal ramifications of celebrating Christmas; companies and groups are having to ban any referance to Christmas and instead celebrate an arbitrary holiday due to aggressive and intolerant minorities.

Even if someone does not wish to celebrate Christmas, it should not hinder others from celebrating it.

  8. Yeah I’m Jewish and I have a mother fucking tree in my front room-take that tradition!

  9. Santa is bringing me Absolute New Frontier. I know because my wife had me order it and pick it up for myself. Surprise!

The wages of ‘tolerance’. I wonder how much worse it is in France. I heard what Tony Blair said approx 10 days ago about immigration and multiculturalism and I thought finally somebody gets it, even if it is on his way out. It’s strange that we live in a world where it’s brave to say that a country shouldn’t destroy all of it’s own history and tradition in the name of people from without who don’t want to assimilate.

  10. Let’s try to keep this one on-topic.

A cool lost t-shirt with the numbers on them AND
Absolute DC New Frontier (thanks Em!)

  30. I didn’t ask dfor any Absolutes this year, but I almost put New Frontier on my list.

  31. It’s absolutely gorgeous. Best Absolute version of a story so far.

  32. I got New Frontier yesterday and I’d never read it before. It is beautiful and the story is great. I read the first 200 pages last night.

  33. Also, I had bought for myself and got to read over the last few days:
Maus-one of the best gn I’ve ever read. really good
Daredevil Father-if you can look past the art it’s a great story. How does jq not know that DD isn’t that big and never has been? jesus

  34. This definitely was the comic-est Christmas ever. Judging from the ad copy on the boxes, I have over 40,000 pages to read now. I got BOTH the DVD of all Uncanny X-Men ever AND the DVD of all Fantastic Fours ever…! So, there goes ’07.

In addition, I got “Stagger Lee” from Image (a fascinating piece of local history) and “The New Adventures of Jesus” from Fantagaphics (apparently a pioneering underground comic; again, the artist is apparently a local I’ve never heard about). And those are just the comics; 90% of my gifts this year were books.

  35. Jimski – let us know if you like the DVDs. I’ve debated picking them up, especially for Fantastic Four. I’m just dubious about reading comics on my laptop. I kind of want the thing in my hands, or a platform that is more akin to book reading than pdfs. (Speaking of new platforms, is Sony e-Reader out yet?).

Fred – Maus I is certainly the cream of the crop. Check out Stuck Rubber Baby if you haven’t read that either. It was my first comic that was out of the typical genres we’re used to, and really opened me up to the fact that the medium was capable of more than men in tights.

  36. dustin- I think I like the DVDs, but they are not so much “akin to reading PDFs” as they are “a gigantic DVD full of actual PDFs,” which sort of surprised me. If you’ve ever seen that sequential image reader program that bad, bad people use to read illicitly downloaded comics, well, I wouldn’t know anything about that but it sounds like a superior way to read comics on a PC. The PDFs take a little more getting used to; when I read a book, I do not need to “zoom.”

On the other hand, I have 45 years of comics on a disc complete with the ads and letter columns, which I would almost, almost pay extra for as a primary-source nerd. In addition, I like the way they use the PDFs: you can open up the main index file, click “80s”, click “1984,” and choose the issue you want to read by its cover. Good times. Plus, annuals! Everyone always forgets the lowly annuals.

  37. cDisplay is the awesomest simple program I’ve never used but heard bad people talk about. The pick a year thing sounds cool though and the letters pages.

Dustin- I probably will check that out. I’ve got a backlog right now but I’ll probably get to it. I’ve only ever gotten one bad referral here. I can’t remember who recommended it but I began reading Palestine the other day because somebody here said it was good. 50 pages in I closed it never to open it again. I’m going to leave it at that.

  38. I recommended Palestine, and whether you agree with it or not, it’s a well done and unique piece of comics. I found it extremely powerful, but I understand how some might have a hard time with it. Was it the politics or the style you had a problem with?

Other than the comics I got from iFanboy gifting, I got ZERO comics this year, other than a $50 gift certificate to Midtown Comics. I can’t decide whether to buy my regular books with it, or get something else.

Finally, let me just say that the first two trades of Brubaker’s Captain America have me changed. Fucking spectacular. Holy mother of crap was that good. Had I read them spaced out over 14 months, I may have killed myself in anticipation, and I don’t know how you all did it, but if you haven’t read them, go read them.

  39. it was the politics and not just the politics but also the style in which he portrayed characters that he didn’t happen to agree with.

I’m trying to thinly walk the line on this because of all the political implications so I’m going to just leave that side of it there.

Stylistically, I didn’t like it either. The pencils were horrifying and the lettering style and dialog box angle rotation were very fun house.

I thought it was you but I didn’t want to say because if I were to get into how deeply I was whatever by it, I didn’t want you to think that I was attacking you. I blame joe sacco.

  40. Heard and accepted. Sorry you didn’t like it. I never said it wasn’t controversial.

  41. That’s cool. You guys have recommended a bunch of other stuff that I’ve really liked. This was the one exception.

  42. While spending my Star Clipper gift card today, I was so, so close to buying Cup Noodle Adventure Challenge Force. You’d better believe that never would have penetrated the manga blind spot without iFanboy. (In the end, I decided I could probably get it cheaper elsewhere. Comichole.com, perhaps.)

Speaking of which: I am almost certain to switch to Comic Hole in ’07 to save cash (I mean, 30-50% off? Why am I paying double just to get it today? Am I Astonishingly Retarded?) but I am intimidated and fear change. Is anyone else using them? Any pointers/recommendations/dire warnings?
