EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW: Francesco Francavilla on CAPTAIN AMERICA & BUCKY #626

Fresh from the Man Without Fear and creepy James Gordon Jr., fan favorite artist, Francesco Francavilla brings his unique pulp style to Captain America & Bucky #626.

There are few artists who could adequately follow up the mesmerizing excellence that was Chris Samnee’s work on the previous arc of the title, but Francavilla might just be the guy. Equally exciting, but with a style all his own, Francavilla shares some of the same kind of classic, yet new elements that Samnee brought to the work. Just looking at the way the Human Torch is rendered tells you everything you need to know. There’s nothing extra there, and the drawing is hard to place in a specific comics era, but it looks exactly right in a modern comic book regardless.

We can only assume the prolific Francavilla will be doing this book in addition to providing covers for 65% of all comic books produced in the US market.

Captain America & Bucky #626, Francavilla’s second issue, is out on January 25, written by Ed Brubaker and James Asmus.

Comments

  1. I really love this guy. At first I thought it was because he did such amazing sketches on Twart. But after reading his actual comics, I can say that this guy is right up there.

  2. Lord Almighty, look at those colors! Just beautiful. I picked up the first HC of this an hour ago and can’t wait to get home and check out the beautiful Samnee art. Too bad I have to wait another 8 months or so for Francavilla’s work to be collected. I’m sure it’ll be worth it, though.

  3. One of my favorite artists working right now. You can tell he’s really doing something fresh and original, because no one else is able to copycat him. =)

Is this issue going to be the start of a new story or was/is that #625?

  4. Francavilla has, hands down, the craziest color palettes in comics. They skate that edge of almost absurdity—but in that, that there is mastery. Man, just might have to drop cash on Cap now.

  5. This is fantastic. Brubaker and art talent like Chris Samnee and Francavilla is the only reason I’ve been reading Captain America.

  6. Looking forward to it.

  7. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. When I heard that Samnee was leaving this book I was concerned because he is one of my favorite artists working. When I heard that Francavilla was taking over I was over the moon, he does amazing work and I’m really pumped to see this.

  8. Samnee is my favorite artist currently, so I’ll probably judge Francavilla hard for taking his place. But, at the same time, I’ll still give this a shot.
