Evolution of the Batmobile

The Batmobile is one of the most iconic vehicles of all time. You'd recognize it anywhere, but it's amazing to note just how much change the car that carries The Dark Knight has gone through over the years. This image breaks it all down. It's massive and it's awesome, be sure to click to ginormigate the whole thing for close inspection.

  1. i want this on my bedroom wall

  2. Wow!  There were two (no kidding)…two times I thought I had come to the end of the image, only to discover the picture just kept going on.

Amazingly cool! (But I’m still not switching my auto insurance. Sorry!)

  3. … is this saying the batmobiles are fully covered?

  4. Of course, what kind of deductable does Batman have to pay? I mean, I know it’s usually the Joker‘s fault, but his rates must be insane!

  5. Plus, can you imagine getting his insurance information in the first place?

“Oh Batty!!  We need to exchange out insurers!!!  You might think your rates are high, but mine are really a JOKE!! HAHAHAHA!!” (The Joker, Auto Comics #1)

  6. Oh wow! This is amazing. Must study in depth after work.

One of the highlights of my childhood was getting a chance to meet George Barris and sit inside one of the OG Batmobiles at a Car show. It was super awesome.

  7. My favorite one is still the one from the 1966 TV show featuring the 1955 Futura.  Awesome!

  8. So many cars, amazing

  9. @iSteve  DITTO ! Maybe it’s because of the red bats on the rims! I had this version as a wind up toy.
     BEST. CHRISTMAS. EVER.

  10. Hey where is the Batmobile from Batman the Dark Knight returns?

  11. @Cavebird: Excellent question. My first thought as well. Ryan?

“The Batmobile — That’s what you called it, Dick. Kind of name a kid would come up with. … I modified her during some nasty riots fifteen years ago. The only thing I know of that can cut through her hide isn’t from this planet. … Rubber bullets. Honest.”

  12. My favorite is the Animated Series Batmobile. So sweet!

  13. @conor, since Batman is your favorite hero, do you have any favorites?

  14. No Batman Beyond-mobile love? sadface.jpg

  15. @TheGoddamnDeadpool  I know! I love that car, but I think they may have taken it out because it can fly.

  16. 1992 animated series batmobile is my favorite 🙂

  17. Seriously an awesome graphic, is this available in posters as this would probably be a big seller.

  18. 89 Batmobile is my favorite.  Never knew Batman was a Corvette fan.

  19. @smeeeeee  I agree, the 90’s animated Batmobile was bad-ass. Kinda disappointing that the Dark Knight Returns is not featured, considering that’s one of the best batman books EVER!

  20. It’s amazing how bad/boring some of those are.  It’s also amazing that the 1960’s TV Batmobile might be the best one… and the other best ones are not from the comics (Tim Burton’s, Chris Nolan’s, BTAS.)

  21. Actually, the ones from the 50’s are cool, the ones from the 60’s are just the TV one, the ones from the 70’s through until 1989 (Tim Burton) just look like cars, the ones from the 90’s are largely overdesigned and aesthetically grotesque (thanks 90’s comics!), and the ones from the ’00’s are surprisingly dull.

The TV/movie ones are by far the best ones… except for those early 50’s ones, which are also great.

  22. I love The Animated Series batmobile, it`s the first thing that comes to mind when someone says that word. Followed by the Adam West`s car.

  23. @smeeeeee  agreed!

  24. I felt like I was in a car showroom. An AWESOME car showroom.

I really liked the Arkham video game version.

  25. Even as a comic book fan, and someone who promotes comics over their adaptations in other media, I have to say I’ve never liked the Batmobiles in the comics except when they are obviously inspired by the ’89 film and BTAS. I started reading Batman in the late ’80s, and I was so disappointed by how ugly the Batmobile was.

This is a cool image. While I’m not a fan of the styles, I like the idea that the Batmobiles in the comics in the ’70s were as close to the real-life cars as possible. However, any Batmobile with a Batman head on the hood needs to scrapped ASAP.

  26. @SamIam – The Batmobile from G. Mo and Quitely’s Batman and Robin can fly, and that’s included. I wonder why that and DK Returns were left out?

  27. My favorites were always the Burton’s Batmobile and the Batman TAS Batmobile.

@TheGoddamnDeadpool: Same here, no Batman Beyond love????

  28. Do they sell a door poster of this? I would totally buy it. I’m the “Batmobile guy” at work – I have at least 25 different ones in various scales on my desk. One of the coolest things I ever did was when my kids and I met Adam West at a con and got our picture made sitting in the TV Batmobile. I WANT THAT CAR DAMMIT!

  29. That first one from 2000 looks like Batman is getting into his car after a hard day at Initech.

I like the second 2004 version as well, it looks like a shorter version of the Burton Batmobile. Though it looks like it might have a tough time clearing speedbumps.

  30. This is perfect! Now when I win the lotto I’ll have a bunch of choices for building my own batmobile.

Did I say when? *ahem* I meant if, if I win the lotto. I’m not expecting any money…. yet!

  31. i love the year 2000 batman getting into the car. Batman mundainly drives to waynecorp, forgetting he is still wearing the cowl.

  32. The Tim Burton one is probably still my favorite.

  33. What about the big ass truck he drove during No Man’s Land?
