Enter the COULSON RING: Marvel Details Agent Coulson Extras for Upcoming THOR Blu-Rays

I think we all remember exactly where we were and what was happening when S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson sauntered into our lives. We were at the movie theater watching Iron Man in 2008. Okay, that was a gimme.

We didn't know it then, but this polite representative for an alphabet soup agency was about to change the shape of the superhero movie. Agent Coulson is what elevated Thor from pretty decent to wildly delightful. By that same tack, Agent Coulson is the void I felt in Captain America: The First Avenger, an otherwise entertaining romp through WWII. "Is that him in the parka?" I wondered in the opening bookend scene. "Maybe they could have him appear however anachronistically via the same technology as Dean Stockwell from Quantum Leap," I continued to posit for the remaining two hours.

If Tony Stark is the thrusted pelvis of the Marvel Studios universe, and Steve Rogers its heart, Phil Coulson is…its Phil Coulson

A document for my fascination with the character and his domestic life within this interconnected world of arc reactors and mystic hammers, (the ligaments maybe?) can be found on my Google + account as part of the "Coulson Ring." Silly things like this happen there:

Anyway, the big news is that Marvel is offering some Coulsontastic bonus features as exclusives on the Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray editions of Thor, due out in September.

Included is a short called "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" and another feature called "Marvel One-Shot: The Consultant." Here's a quick look at the teaser which was unveiled at SDCC 2011, just before Clark Gregg himself appeared (hopefully amidst pyrotechnic overtures).

Here's what Gregg had to say about the character and the journey:

“I think of Agent Coulson, after all these years, as a guy with a full life,” admits Gregg. “I think every day he’s somewhere doing something for S.H.I.E.L.D., and yet I don’t always know what that is. The fun thing for me is, every time I get a new script to see whether it’s Don Payne who wrote it or Joss Whedon, and whether it’s being directed by [Jon] Favreau or Ken Branagh, I’m always happy about it because I get to find out a little bit more about what his life is like and who he is. There’s always a different twist. In this one he gets to show more of his wisecracking wit, and in this one he’s a little bit more of a badass.”

How excited are we about this? A.) Very  B.) Very very. C.) Especially D.) Oh man! Wow! E.) All of the Above

The answer of course. Is E.

Comments

  1. Is “The Consultant” Eric O’Grady?

  2. I’m so desperate for content that I’m going to buy this and watch it every day with my Life cereal.

  3. Wonderful! The fact that he hasn’t appeared yet in the comics is honestly surprising.

  4. I hear Clark Gregg wants a SHIELD TV show. I’d watch the shit outta that if he was in it.

    SON OF COUL!

  5. My friend and I were at the Cup O’ Joe panel and he was asking if Coulson would be appearing in the Comics any time soon. Joe had no real comment but sortly after Clark Greg appeared and we were all amazed and excited. He seems to be a real nice guy.

  6. i think the consultant mught be tony, given what he said about him, and the ending of iron man 2 with tony saying he could be a consultant and also tony showig up at the end of incredible hulk

  7. Another reason to buy Thor.

  8. @RapidEyeMovement  The Son of Coul thing had me cracking up.  I dont think anyone else in the theater got it.

  9. This is a little bizarre, but awesome. Love the idea, looking forward to the execution.

  10. Well, that’s gone from a DVD purchase to a Blu-Ray purchase.

  11. @StupendousMan  I kind of imagine him having always been there, just never in a way we’ve seen from the comics.  I’d love a Coulson mini-series, sort of ‘Marvels’ from a mid-level S.H.I.E.L.D agent’s point of view.

  12. Can we have some Agent Coulson shorts on the Marvel DVD like the DC shorts on the animated movies?  I would buy those in a heart beat.

  13. @Heroville
I thought it was pretty clear he was referring to Tony Stark as Stark was going to be a consultant for S.H.I.E.L.D at the end of Iron Man 2.

  14. Post-coital Thor would never stay long enough in a relationship to be forced to watch the Notebook

  15. Son of Coul – I am your ally!

  16. That caption is exceptional.  Exceptional.

  17. I’d be psyched to see Coulson pull a Harly Quin and make his way into the books.
