Creator Owned Comics Celebrated at Image Expo in 2012

Image ExpoWhen Comic-Con International announced that due to scheduling issues and construction at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, WonderCon would be held in Anaheim in 2012, there was a sudden cry of anguish from all the comics fans in the San Francisco Bay Area. A long lasting tradition in the con schedule, WonderCon has been a place for comics creators, publishers and fans to gather in the city by the bay.  To be honest, personally, WonderCon has provided some of the most fun times in iFanboy’s history, so when the move was announced, I too cried out in anguish.

Earlier this week the news broke that Image Comics, who are are headquartered in Berkeley, CA, stepped up to fill the void left in WonderCon’s absence. Fans of comics in the San Francisco bay area can look forward to February 24th through 26th at the Oakland Convention Center for Image Expo.

2012 is going to be a big year for Image Comics as they celebrate their 20th anniversary, and Image Expo is a a must attend event for any fan of Image Comics partners Erik Larsen, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri, Robert Kirkman and Jim Valentino will be appearing along with other Image founders Rob Liefeld and Whilce Portacio. In addition to those comics stars, other Image creators such as Joe Casey, Jonathan Hickman, Jay Faerber, Ryan Ottley, Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples, and Richard Starkings will be in attendance. It’s probably safe to guess that even more creators will be added to the list of guests by the time the Expo rolls around.

Anyone who’s a fan of Image Comics knows that Image represents creator owned comics and in doing so, Image Expo isn’t just about Image Comics, as they promise to celebrate independent comics by opening the exhibit floor to anyone who produces creator owned comics. We’ve heard some rumblings as to who may attend, and it’s sounds like it’s shaping up to be an event worth attending for fans of creator owned and independent comics.  In addition to the exhibit floor, their announcement includes the news that there will programming for fans, creators and library professionals, as well as special events and a massive benefit auction to continue Image’s long tradition of supporting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Image Expo will be held at the Oakland Convention Center from February 24th to February 26th in 2012.

  1. This. Sounds. Awesome.

I don’t typically travel for cons, but methinks I’m going to start for this one.
