Childhood Flashback: Marvel’s 1987 Thanksgiving Day Float

Augie De Blieck literally just made my day. He found a link to video from the 1987 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade that featured a float populated with Marvel characters!

Oh, YouTube, is there nothing you don’t have?

It is not hyperbole to suggest that this float was the highlight of my 10th year on this planet. Somewhere in my apartment I still have pictures that we took of the float that day at the parade.

As an obsessive 10 year old comic reader those characters were so real to me, and to see them right there in front of me… well, it blew my little mind. I remember being so excited I could barely speak/breathe/move.

Now, 18 years later I’m a different kind of comic book reader, one who is self-aware and full of cynicism. A part of me misses the feeling of being 10 years old and unable to breathe because Captain America was RIGHT THERE.

Comments

  1. What the hell was Luke Cage doing there?

I miss the feeling of loving the comics from my youth, too. And comics are better than they have been in a long time. I think it has all just been too much. The 90s really took something away we’ll never get back. Knightfall, the Death of Superman, the countless crappy X-Men crossovers (Scott Lobdell alone!), and so on. Can we ever really trust them again?

“Oh, YouTube, is there nothing you don’t have?”

I love Boom Goes the Dynamite…

  2. Was that the musical theme from Back to the Future? Was the float going 88 miles per hour?

  3. HAHAHA,and that Robocop. He just went like. Oops sorry wrong carriage. What a cool mess! choreography has come a long way.

  4. flippin’ sweet! doc strange and the white queen! they really dug deep. but who was that holding wolvie? i couldnt place “her”?

  5. Is that Magneto at the 58 second mark? This is so funny. Dr Strange looks like a 70s porn star which I’m a huge fan of. They should’ve named their float Captain America kicks everyone’s ass.

  6. For real, Cap took out the Hulk! So this is where Mark Millar got that idea. Awfully generous of Dr. Doom and Green Goblin to catch him. They aren’t so evil after all. I might have missed him, but did they snub Spidey? That was the Enchantress who was holding Wolverine. Cap actually jumped out of the comics.

I think it’s less the comics and more the fact that we are not 10 anymore. When I was 10 I was reading Giffen & Maguire’s Justice League which can still be read and enjoyed now.

  8. That was cheesy, burt great. Sitting here watching that made me feel like I was a little kid. Instead of being in my office, I was at my parents house in my Superman PJs eating cereal and waiting for Mom to finish with Thanksgiving dinner.

  9. Yes, Aaron, it was. And that was the best part of the video. Had Marty or even Lea Thompson shown up it would have been MUCH better.

  10. When I was ten years old, there is no way I would have been wearing Superman PJs while watching Marvel heroes.

Today, my nephew wears Fantastic Four underwear. I keep telling my sister, “He has Thing on his butt.” She asks, “What thing?” I say. “The Thing!” She raises her voice, “I don’t see anything.” I have had this exchange three seperate times. I may be older, but I still enjoy teasing my sister.

  11. Robocop?

The villainess was a Thor character. I can’t remember her name at the moment.

That ending made no sense at all. No sense.

  12. Robocop?

Robocop had a Marvel comic around that time, that’s all I can think of…

The villainess was a Thor character. I can’t remember her name at the moment.

Dave Graham: “That was the Enchantress who was holding Wolverine.”

  13. cap pushed down magneto? beat hulk? white queen was shooting some kind of string at people?

    so bizarre

    good find ifanboy…good find

  14. I want those giant comics.

  15. golden, absolutely golden…

  16. Wait. Did I just see Robocop?

  17. Hey dudes, I just watched the news … is everything allright?

  18. Everything’s fine with us. Thanks for asking.

We’re watching it on TV now and probably know as much as you at this point.

  19. I gotta say… when the news report first came on I had a major flashback.

Josh and I work in a BIG building.

Thanks for the concern, though. 🙂

  20. I am happy to hear you guys are ok. Its wierd when you hear “a plane has crashed into an apartment building in NY” and your first thought is I hope the ifanboy guys are ok.

    Stay safe guys.

  21. I can’t even imagine what it must be like living in the place where this is actually happening, especially during this crazymaking phase where everyone is reporting the story but no one has any actual information. I can’t even find a radio station reporting the story, and I’m climbing the walls 1000 miles away.

iFanboy broke this story for me; I hadn’t heard until Simon brought it up.

  22. A shocking twist:

The plane was owned and flown (apparently) by New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle.

This is unconfirmed, but it’s all over the place.

I have to say, as someone who was here in New York for 9/11, this has been a… weird afternoon.

  23. Yeah, I hear that JMS is already planning a very special issue of Thor about it.

  24. and it will be full of timeline holes and issues
and cory lidle will knock up emma frost two days before his apparent final flight

  25. Thank god it was an accident, thats going to save us another G.I Joe pick of the week.

  26. It was a good first issue!

    We were emotional!

  27. Do you ever look back at just a year or so ago and marvel at the way your comments sections have blown up since then?

  28. You mean, do we ever spend hours talking about just how awesome we’ve become? About the legions of fans whom we command, who lavish praise on us almost daily?

    No…hardly ever really.

Seriously though, it awesome. That’s partly because it took such a long time to get here and largely because so far, the community is so much like we’d intended and full of thoughful, intelligent, funny people. We knew you must have been out there, and we only needed a way to find each other. Oddly enough, that way was the nearly intolerable sounds of our own voices.

This thread, by the way…all over the map.

  29. That seems to be the pattern with most threads on ifanboy.

  30. Wow, I started reading the first post and then the last, as i’m wont to do.

    I got whiplash!

    That’s ALWAYS fun.

  31. I hate you. I hate you all.

  32. That video shows why the X-men movie was wise to stay away from the color spandex

  33. I for one would not have minded a spandex clad flashback scene. If would have fit in perfectly in the crap-fest that is The Last Stand.

BTW I’m buying the DVD tonight!

  34. If you think it’s a crapfest, why are you giving them more of your money?

  35. I found it for $9.99 used. That’s the most I’ll pay for it. I can’t help it.

I would not pay $20 so I’m at peace with this decision.

There were some cool scenes. I’ll just fast forward and get the movie over in 20 minutes.

…and I have the first two already. Can’t help it.

  36. That money would be better spent giving it to some random dude on the street to punch you in the mouth.

It would hurt a lot less than X3.

  37. LOL. You make a valid point, but it’s only $9.99 previously viewed! That’s gotta count for something.

And the cover is shiny. I can’t resist shiny covers. I have them all!!!

I get punched in the pysche everyday, I’ll leave the mouth alone.
