CASTING: Lucy Punch Cast as Deena Pilgrim in POWERS TV Pilot

While people were certainly excited about Charles S. Dutton being cast in the Powers pilot for FX, what they really wanted to know is who will be cast as Deena Pilgrim and Christian Walker, and we’re 50% of the way there. Deadline is reporting that Lucy Punch landed the role of plucky detective Deena Pilgrim.

Who is Lucy Punch? That is an excellent and valid question, and one I asked myself mere moments ago. You might recognize the British actress from Dinner for Schmucks, Hot Fuzz, or the TV series, The Class. What is clear is that she is an actress, and she might even actually be blond, yet I have no way of testing the latter supposition.

The pilot, which is only that so far, is based on the comic book series, Powers, created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming.

Comments

  1. One thing I know: her real name is 100,000 times better than her character’s name.

  2. Well that’s a different casting choice. I’m familiar with Ms. Punch, as she’s been popping up in more and more American films over the past year or so. Recently saw her in Woody Allen’s film from last year, “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” and the unfunny 80’s set “Take Me Home Tonight.” Have seen her in a couple other things as well. And none of what I’ve seen says Deena Pilgrim AT ALL.

She tends to play loud, obnoxious women who you as the viewer are meant to find annoying and offputting. Often a character who is persuing the male lead and who the male lead wants nothing to do with. She’s also quite tall. So besides being blonde, I’m not seeing anything resembling the comic book character.

Not complaining though. Who knows. Maybe she will totally fit for what the tv people are going for. I think I read somewhere that the tv show isn’t going to be an exact carbon copy of the book. And that it could in fact end up being a rather loose adaptation. So I guess it’s wait and see.

  3. I only know her from Hot Fuzz where she played the really obnoxious ditz who got killed about a third of the way through.

  4. At least she’s blonde! 😉

  5. Nice.

  6. It’s an interesting choice, from all the photo’s I’ve seen she has never had choped off short hair, hopefully not an omen. She’s VERY British, I wonder if she’ll be trying to put on an accent like Andrew Lincoln does as Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead. After looking at some video’s I think she has a decent range and the face/ qwirk for it, so fingers crossed.

Some video’s and extra info of her if anyone wants it.

  7. Hurm.

  8. This… is a very strange choice. I mean, she might be great but nothing I’ve seen of her exactly screams Deena Pilgrim.

  9. hahaha the girl with the annoying laugh from HOT FUZZ! nice!

  10. Can Johnny Royale be Timothy Dalton be way of Simon Skinner pleasepleaseplease?

  11. I really wanted Katee Sackhoff to be Pilgrim.  She would have been perfect.

  12. She’s a spunky small blonde chick with a background in rapid fire comedic dialogue. what’s not to get?

  13. @edward – She isn’t small. She’s 5’9″.

  14. Thats a great name.

  15. @gat0rl1vebeatz  I was thinking the same thing! Now I need to go watch Hot Fuzz again. And laugh like an insane person when they open up the old guys shack and see the horde of weapons, and Nick Frost goes “By the power of greyskull…..” cracks me up every damn time!

  16. @j206  you got me

  17. check her in “Vexed”. great choice for the role.

  18. I am puzzled by this. But I assume Bendis had some say in it? If so, then I’m open to it.

  19. yeah, i kind of get the impression Bendis has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to film and other media. He talks about the Howard stern show every single time he is on wordballoon

  20. I saw her in a show called Vexed last year, she was good in it.
Seems like a good choice for the character.

  21. Knowing her CV, this is great casting. I’ve greatly enjoyed all her performances in the past two years, and was not excited about this series until now.

  22. When I first saw the picture in this article, I thought she was that posh chick from season one of SKINS (UK).

Watched her interview on Craig Ferguson on Youtube. Interesting choice. Could work out really well. Depends on Walker of course. I’ll remain optimistic at this point.

  23. @LukeB  She might be “Very British” but she can easily pull off an “American” accent. She plays the red head teacher in Bad Teacher (new Cameron Diaz movie).

  24. I thought they should have gotten Nathan Fillion as Deena 🙂

  25. I dont think she has quite the spunk.

  26. Duck pond!
