‘Captain America’ Winning The Global Box Office War

Chris Evans as Captain America

When Captain America: The First Avenger was initially announced there was a lot of speculation on how the film would be received overseas. Sure, superhero films are popular, and sure the Marvel Studios Avengers family of films are especially popular. But this is a film with an uber-US patriotic title and main character and no one was quite sure how that would play in, say, China.

As it turns out, the whole world loves Captain America.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that not only is Captain America doing quite well in international box office, it’s defying expectations and even out-pacing other Marvel Studios films like Thor in some countries.

Regions that Captain America is doing big business in include Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Ireland, Australia, Spain, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom. Much of the big money that Captain America is pulling in is being attributed to its higher priced 3D showings, which are really popular in Latin America and in parts of Asia.

According to BoxOfficeMojo, Captain America: The First Avenger has grossed, as of this writing, $157 million domestically and $131 million in the foreign market. Analysts are predicting that the foreign market should eventually hit $200 million.

  1. Awesome. It was a well-done film, and I’m glad to see it making money for its creators, producers and investors. Hopefully this will mean that more movies of this kind can be produced, and the fun world of the Marvel Universe can continue to be explored on film.

  2. Wow! Ever since it was first announced I’ve been skeptical about the sucess of Cap in the overseas market, but im glad to see that a good movie is getting the audience it deserves even with the patriotic ethnocentric slant. I’ve also heard that there were only two countries which opted to market the film as only “The First Avenger” meaning they were confident that it was marketable with the name Captain America. I’m very surprise and very pleased

  3. I wouldn’t say its matching Thor internationally its made more than double Captain America’s international gross.

  4. Good to see! This was my favorite movie of the summer!

  5. Great to here! Of the four summer superhero flicks, Cap was my favorite.

  6. i love how the movies fit together. i hope they do it with the amazing spiderman movie. i know it doesn’t have to but it would just be fun to see that

  7. Nice. I didn’t think it would do well overseas.

  8. not surprisingly, Germany is absent from the “Captain A takes on the European market” tour 🙂

  9. This is not surprise to me. Who doesn’t LOVE America!? … oh, wait.

  10. @cskilpatrick that sucks. I’m still hoping he’ll swing bye somewhere in the background in the avengers. *fingers crossed*

  11. Chalk up another disappointment. sigh
