My earliest memory of wanting to make comics was, as was the case with many others, How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way by Stan Lee and John Buscema.
Today, most seem to pick up what they can on DeviantArt and communicating with artists via Twitter, and message boards. But what if you want a regular old book, and the stability and familiarity therein?
Enter Buddy Scalera, a comics profession who’s been around the industry long enough to know a thing or two, as well as a hell of a lot of pros. In the past year, Buddy has released 2 big books, with pages and everything, for your referential edification.
To start, there’s Creating Comics from Start to Finish, which is a fairly self-explanatory and all inclusive title. In it, you’ll find just about all the basic information for anyone wanting to get started making comics, and get a little guidance along the way. The book contains interviews and advice from folks like Stan Lee, Mark Waid, Joe Quesada, Darick Robertson, and more.
A little more focused, but still useful is the Colossal Collection of Action Poses, a book I didn’t even know there was a need for. But Amanda Conner contributed a cover, so there must be something to it. While it’s primarily a photoreference book, there are also lessons and advice from notable artists such as Mitch Breitweiser, Jamal Igle, JG Jones, Terry Moore, and others.
This has been your making comics tip of the day*
*a tip is not guaranteed every day, nor have such claims been warranted expressly or otherwise.

i’m no artist, but that woman on Creating Comics looks… off. Greg-Landish I would say…
Maybe pick a better picture for the cover?
Maybe write your own effing book?
Books have been a huge help to me. Hi-Fi’s books on coloring, Will Eisner’s books on sequential storytelling, and (on a very basic level) How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way.
I have a ton of these. For drawing I can’t recommend enough….

I wonder if the upcoming Art of Amanda Conner will have some How To stuff in it.
