Batman as Joker?

There are rumblings that Michael Keaton is being considered for the part of The Joker in the sequel to Batman Begins.

I dig it.

Now, granted, this a rumor from an Australian gossip site, so you have to take it with a grain of salt, but it’s really not a terrible idea. Some of the other casting ideas aren’t too terrible. I could really go for Paul Bettany.

I’m not so into Mark Hamill, and big thumbs down for Steve Carell. He’s not right at all.

Then again, I wouldn’t have cast Liam Neeson as Ra’s Al Ghul either.

Comments

  1. He’d be good. This Joker needs to be bowel-loosening scary.

  2. Give me Crispin Glover!

  3. Not scary.

  4. Oh I think he has it in him…

  5. If by it, you mean copious amounts of old residual LSD, then yes. He has it in him.

That train has sailed my friend, and even if he did have it in him, he doesn’t now. But here’s why I really don’t think it’s a good idea.

Glover has, in him, and in every time I’ve ever seen him perform, a vulnerability. He comes off as creepy, but weak. Or even creepy despite that he is weak. He seems like he doesn’t really have much in him, and when he shines, it’s when he plays a character who overcomes that gentleness.

Now that is exactly opposite what the Joker is. The Joker is evil incarnate. There is no weakness, unsureness, or vulnerability. The Joker must be resolutely scary. The Joker is without doubt about himself, and is not afraid. That does not sound like Crispin Glover.

  6. Huzzah!

  7. admit it, you’re just afraid of the unparalled talent of Crispin Glover

  8. A deflection does not a winning argument make.

Using logic, and/or examples, explain to me why you think he would really be good at it.

  9. two words: Ryan Reynolds

  10. NEXT!

  11. Paul Bettany is the big rumored name right now. Not sure if he’s right for the part, but he’s a good actor. Which is pretty much what I said about every Begins cast member, and look how that turned out.

  12. I like unusual choices, and Bettany would certainly be that…

  13. I don’t think Bettany is all that unusal, but then, how will he fare in a film where he doesn’t play Russell Crowe’s best friend?

I think they’re making the push to try to make him a big star. Not sure if he’s got the stuff, but I like most of the choices he’s made. If you’ve ever seen Gangster #1, you know he can be menacing.

  14. He’s unusual in that he’s not at all scary.
