‘Ultimate Spider-Man #111’ Preview: “Bagley you say? Hmmm… Nope, doesn’t ring a bell”

The first previews from Ultimate Spider-Man #111 are up on the web today, and for the first time, we see what new artist, Stuart Immonen has in store for us.

I think this was a good choice.

It’s got none of those messy word balloons cluttering the pages either. Actually, it’s sort of interesting that Bendis is going with an alternate scripting style for Immonen’s first books out of the gate. Like that great “screenplay” issue of Alias, Bendis has a knack for changing the comic book idiom just enough to make it fresh, but still feel appropriate.

Back to Immonen though. I can’t think of another guy who can do so many styles so competently. You weren’t aware of his differing styles?

Check this out. I think Ultimate Spider-Man fans are going to be happy.

Comments

  1. This new guy looks great. But I am not the best person to comment. I want competent art–good art. I happy to have great art but I want the stuff in a timely fashion.

I would be so pleased to hear Bryan Hitch was never going to do another Marvel comic after the whole Ultimates debacle. The same for the guy on civil war.

I don’t want crap art, but i know plenty of guys who could give good pages without the headaches and delays of a Hitch or a Cho.

PS–who is the villain in these pages–Ultimate Dalmatian?

  2. I wasn’t a big fan of Bagley’s art. In fact, that’s what stopped me from buying the book after the first trade. This I like.

  3. oh yeah. i LOVE Immonen. I hope (though i doubt it) that he sticks around as long as Bagley!
    soooo slick.

  4. I really enjoyed Bagley’s art in Ultimate Spider-Man, but Stuart Immonen is one of my all time favorites. I’m psyched.

  5. It’ll be fine. I’ll miss Bagley for sure though.

  6. Is this the guy that did a fill-in issue of Flash? Maybe Flash #4? Regardless, I really like the new look.

  7. I am also a huge fan of Immonen. I’m glad to see his style shift a bit towards his older artwork, which is radically different than the style he uses is Nextwave and Ultimate FF. If you go check out some of his older stuff like Secret Identity (the Superman elseworlds by Busiek) and Shock Rockets (also by Busiek) I think you’ll see what I’m talking about. So basically I’m psyched for him to hit the ground running.

As far as the villain in the images, I remember a guy from the cartoon show called the Spot.( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spot_(comics) ) He had that domino pattern and could open up wormholes all around him . One of the shots on IGN looks like Spider-man is punching through one of the holes on his chest. I’ve never seen this guy in a comic before but that episode of the cartoon rocked as far as I can recall.

  8. I have always enjoyed Bagley’s art. It isn’t amazing, but the guy gets the job done in a good way. He does Spider-man particularly well. What is most impressive about him is that he gets the job done without ever being late.

See, I don’t mind waiting for Hitch to finish something like Ultimates. It isn’t like there is a shortage of Avengers stories out there. I want to read the next issue of Ultimates as much as the next fan, but in the mean time there is New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and volumes of Avengers Essentials. What isn’t out there is Avengers comics like Hitch draws Avengers/Ultimates comics. So I can wait until the guy finishes, because it is always something I haven’t seen before. Have you seen that preview for the next issue of Ultimates? Most impressive.

  9. At Steve M. –

    It’s the Ultimate Spot.

  10. I think that straight cartooning stuff he did was great. Seems like a funny guy too.

  11. You know, I don’t really read Ultimate Spider-Man (don’t ask me why…the explanation kills goats), but I really think this art is slick for a Spider-Man title. Should be interesting to see if the Ultimate Spidey fans support it with their dollar.

  12. Having already said that art is not priority #1 for me, I actually like Bagley’s art a lot. it is slick and glossy and fits a superhero book to me. His art conveys the emotions of the characters and the action well.

I’ve said before on ifanboy that I am not a fan of Frank cho at all, but I’ll keep buying Mighty Avengers as long as the story is good and is art doesn’t get in the way of my enjoyment of it. Hearing that Bagley is going to do an arc there only improves it for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Hitch’s stuf on Ultimates was really good–just not 3 years to finish a series good.

Maybe my art/visual internal meter is broken–the cheerleader on Heroes is attractive, right?

  13. Looks great. I really like the change. I respect Bagley’s speed, but I’d rather wait between one to three extra weeks if it means the art’s going to be better. I know some of you like Bagley’s art, but I really don’t like it at all.

    Bring on Ultimate Spot!

  14. I prefer this Immonen to “Nextwave” and “ULTXM” Immonen. His “Adventures of Superman” work in the
