  1. This is a big week for me…

    ASTONISHING X-MEN #16
    DAREDEVIL #88
    ETERNALS #3
    HEROES FOR HIRE #1
    NEW AVENGERS #23
    ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #99
    ULTIMATES ANNUAL #2
    WOLVERINE #45

I am getting a little overwhelmed with Marvel lately, but there isn’t anything else out that is appealing to me. Can anyone recommend something in a non-superhero area for this week?

  2. My list is uncannily like Dave’s, except I’m still buying Exiles and I’m not buying Ultimates Annual. (I’ve still got a mad-on for late books, and I’m sort of taking it out on innocents for the time being. The rational part of my personality is scheduled kick back in by the end of the month.)

Oh! And I’m buying Grant Morrison’s Batman, which I wouldn’t have believed before I read the first one.

As for books I can’t believe I’m still buying: nextwave is a lot of fun, but I occasionally think I’ve accidentally bought the previous month’s issue a second time. Reading an entire arc of nextwave in trade form would be exhausting, the comics equivalent of having Pixie Stix for breakfast and then spinning around in circles on the front lawn.

Astonishing X-Men is the one I’m giddy with anticipation for, with New Avengers coming a close second. Given the current nature of the latter book, I have no idea what/who it’s even about.

  3. 16 books for me plus one big ol’ hardcover. Of course I won’t actually get these till next Tuesday since I get them through the mail.

Most excited about – definitely the Absolute Dark Knight. Love the Dark Knight Returns and love the Absolutes so this should be a beauty. For regular books I am probably most excited about Eternals but that’s just because I am a huge Gaiman fan. I am also pretty excited about JLA (unlike the ifanboys I liked #0), Daredevil, Wonder Woman and Batman.

Most of the really good books on here people already are reading (Batman, Daredevil, etc…) but one book that no one talks about is Red Sonja. I have been pleasantly surprised by this book – Mike Oeming writes it and Mel Rubi pencils and the quality is pretty high. The writing has been really good and the art is very pretty. If you like swords, magic, barbarians, etc you should check it out. It is a million times better than The Warlord at DC.

I still can’t believe I am buying anything Michael Turner puts out. I don’t know why I spend money on his books. My wife likes the art, true, but I am sure if I said no she wouldn’t care too much. Someone, please tell me to stop! As for Xena, well, the TV show was always a guilty pleasure and issue #1 was decent so I am still on board for the moment.

    52 WEEK #16 $2.50
    ABSOLUTE DARK KNIGHT HC $99.99
    BATMAN #656 $2.99
    DMZ #10 (MR) $2.99
JACK OF FABLES #2 (MR) $2.99
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA COVER A #1 $3.99
    WONDER WOMAN #2 $2.99
    DAREDEVIL #88 $2.99
    ETERNALS #3 (OF 6) $3.99
    NEW AVENGERS #23 CW $2.99
    ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #99 $2.99
    ULTIMATES ANNUAL #2 $3.99
    RED SONJA #13 $2.99
    SOULFIRE CHAOS REIGN #1 $2.99
    SUPERMARKET #4 (OF 4) $3.99
    XENA #2 $3.50

  4. I am also pretty excited about JLA (unlike the ifanboys I liked #0)

    Josh really liked it.

I liked it more the second time I read it, but I didn’t love it.

  5. Yea nice big week. Getting about 17 books. Can’t wait for JLA and Wonder Woman. Been too long for them. Read somewhere the new Line up for the JLA. Book is gonna rock!!

  6. Pretty much Dave’s list minus Ultimate Spider-man, plus Batman and the Mad Monk (I’ve never read the creator but it seems a lot of people love him and his book, I think it’s called Mage). It’s enough books so that I’ll probably throw Heroes for Hire, Batman and the Mad Monk, and the Ultimates Annual in my box until either I’ve recovered last week’s check bouncing spree or one of you names one of them as Pick of the Week.

Click here to read the first five pages of Batman and the Mad Monk

  7. My list is the same as Dave’s with the addition of Batman #656. Even though my wallet is taking a hit, I’m still really excited about having a big week again. Gotta agree with Dave, Marvel is hitting the nail on the head. I’m really looking forward to USM, New Avengers and the Eternals.

  8. Umm… I think I’ll probably pick up the Wolverine CW tie-in. Maybe the Eternals.

The only thing on the whole list that I’m definitely getting is Fallen Angel tpb from IDW.

  9. Lots of the same stuff on my list as well, plus I’m eyeing the Kraven’s Last Hunt HC, first in Marvel’s series of classic arcs in hardcover. I actually don’t own ANY HCs, so I might break my cherry (Absolute Dark Knight has Christmas Wish List written all over it).

    52
    Batman
    Batman: The Mad Monk
    Daredevil
    Eternals
    Justice League of America
    New Avengers
    Ultimates Annual

  10. All back issues of flash the fastest man alive
    batman #555 and #556
    batman and the mad monk
    JLA#1
    Astonishing x-men #16
Daredevil#88 ( maybe i keep hearing great things about DD but im on the wall with this one.)
Ultimates Annual (ultimates is finally coming out again, even though its only an annual.)
    New Avengers #23
and last but not least fell back issues!
I have never spent this mkuch money on comic books and i hope that no more series start because this is really taking a toll on my finances as i am not old enough to get a job.

  11. I actually don’t own ANY HCs, so I might break my cherry (Absolute Dark Knight has Christmas Wish List written all over it).

Believe you me, it’s taking all of the will power that I can muster to not buy Absolute Dark Knight and Absolute Kingdom Come.

Daredevil#88 ( maybe i keep hearing great things about DD but im on the wall with this one.)

    But… but… it’s YOUR book!

  12. “Believe you me, it’s taking all of the will power that I can muster to not buy Absolute Dark Knight and Absolute Kingdom Come.”

But are you going to be able to resist Darwyn Cooke’s Absolute DC: The New Frontier?

  13. Oh, like I have time to do this too…

    JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1
    BATMAN #656
    ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #99
    DAREDEVIL #88
    NEW AVENGERS #23
    WOLVERINE #45
    52 WEEK #16
    ASTONISHING X-MEN #16
    ETERNALS #3
    FELL #6
    JACK OF FABLES #2
    NARUTO VOL 11 TP

Wait, no…scratch that last one. Seriously, DKR is on the list, just not now. It’s on a future prospectus of books though.

Hey I’ve heard that people out there buy stuff from the wish lists of webcam girls, so if any of you want to buy stuff from my Amazon wish list, please be my guest.

  14. But are you going to be able to resist Darwyn Cooke’s Absolute DC: The New Frontier?

Oh, absolutely not! Hey, that was a pun!

Absolutes New Frontier, Dark Knight, and Kindgom Come will all be on my shelf by New Year’s. Just not RIGHT NOW.

    I have impluse control issues.

  15. I’m such a pushover that I almost ordered ABSOLUTE SANDMAN. So far, I’ve held off. I don’t even like SANDMAN, but the book sure does look pretty.

So far, I’m holding off on ABSOLUTE DKR. I did get KINGDOM COME, though. I remember it being the first real big event book to arrive when I first got on the internet. I can remember all the threads discussing it on USENET as those months rolled by. Good times!

KRAVEN’S LAST HUNT HC is on my list this week, though, for sure.

  16. Not to go off topic, but at some point in November this COULD be a topic. The Marvel solicitations for November are up…

Civil War #7? Maybe someone should fix that.
Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes II??? SWEET!!! The first was so much fun and I didn’t even know this was coming up.
Ultimate Vision #0, I buy anything by John Romita Jr. and Mark Millar is a bonus. The only thing is I know nothing of this Vision. I passed on Ultimate Galactus (or however it is spelled), because I have no appetite for a non-Kirby styled world devourer.

  17. I just a couple months ago got the 9th and 10th trades of Sandman. I mean, I JUST GOT THEM ALL! And then they spring the HC on me. Bastards.

  18. Hey I’ve heard that people out there buy stuff from the wish lists of webcam girls, so if any of you want to buy stuff from my Amazon wish list, please be my guest.
I saw one of you guys had Chabon’s The Final Solution on your wishlist and I’m done with my copy. Email me an address to send it to.

  19. It was me!

Was it good? Damn right I’ll email you. Be warned. I just started part 2 of Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle, and it might be months before I can move on.

  20. I just realized that there’s one book out this week that I haven’t heard ANYbody mention, namely The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation.

  21. I am waiting for the Absolute The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation.

  22. i’m an absolute edition whore. i know i could get like 8 trade paperbacks for the price of one absolute, but they’re so pretty. i have both absolute authorities, absolute watchmen, and my personal favorite, absolute planetary. i wish they had packaged year one and dark knight together instead of the craptastic DK2, but i’m probably gonna pick it up anyways.

astonishing x-men is probably my most anticipated title anytime it comes out(unless it comes out the same week as All Star Superman, but i know there’s not a lot of love for ASS here). Good news is that from here on out astonishing is monthly.

  23. Dave – that’s awesome. I almost cracked up at my desk when I read that.

Oh and you know I am all over that Absolute Sandman. Definitely going on my order this month.

  24. Let’s see, I think I have 5 books this week.

    Astonishing X-Men #16
    Batman #656
    Eternals #3
    Justice League of America #1
    New Avengers #23

I might pick up Daredevil #88, because I’ve heard so much about how good Daredevil is, but I’m sure if this particular issue would be a good jumping on point. Maybe next month or after the next arc.

  25. I’m pretty sure this is a new arc.

  26. i think its a stand alone issue about foggy. next month is the new arc.

  27. Jerome’s got it.

back issues….or just pick it up to try to get up to speed. See if you like the look/feel.

  28. BATMAN #656 $2.99
BATMAN AND THE MAD MONK #1 (OF 6) $3.50
    BLUE BEETLE #6 $2.99
    DMZ #10 (MR) $2.99
JACK OF FABLES #2 (MR) $2.99
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA COVER A #1 $3.99
    WONDER WOMAN #2 $2.99
    ELEPHANTMEN #2 $2.99
    ASTONISHING X-MEN #16 $2.99
    DAREDEVIL #88 $2.99
    ETERNALS #3 (OF 6) $3.99
HEROES FOR HIRE #1 CW $2.99
    NEW AVENGERS #23 CW $2.99
    ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #99 $2.99
    ULTIMATES ANNUAL #2 $3.99
    WOLVERINE #45 CW $2.99
    SUPERMARKET #4 (OF 4) $3.99

Smaller than usual for me, but still enough for me to feel my wallet lighten. Quite a few 3.99ers

I read Daredevil in sneak peaks and it’s pretty good, although not really a good jumping on point. it’s also nowhere near as exciting as the past few issues, but still good in a more slow and reflective kinda way.

Hah Josh, Naruto. And Conor… why you still buying Flash?

  29. And Conor… why you still buying Flash?

    Shhhh…

  30. 52 Week #16
    Batman #656
    Birds of Prey #97
    Blue Beetle #6
    Flash:The Fastest man Alive #3
    Justice League of America #1
    Supergirl #9
Supergirl and the Legion of Super Heroes #21
    Wonder Woman #2
    Ultimates Annual #2
    The Walking Dead #30

Pretty big week for me, but i’m not sure if TWD #30 is out or not, it’s on Midtown’s list but not Diamonds, guess i’ll find out tomorrow.

  31. Ernie Colon and Sid Jacobson were on NPR’s Talk of the Nation. If you are curious about The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation, you might find it interesting to listen.

    http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5690970

I am curious about how a piece of non-fiction could translate into graphic story-telling. I will have to thumb through this before I decide if I want to buy it.

  32. I saw a story on that in this month’s Esquire. For some reason, I guess I didn’t feel the need to read this in graphic form. I’ve got the actual 9/11 commission at home, and I still haven’t found my way to reading it, but I think if I did want to, I’d rather do that. Not sure why.

  33. I’ve been telling myself I’m gonna buy the 9/11 Commission Report since the day it came out, even though it’s available online and I could easily sit down and read it any time but haven’t. I was sorely tempted to buy the graphic version, partly because I actually stand a chance of reading it that way. But yesterday I heard the artists talking about it on NPR, and they raised the additional point that the Arab names and complicated timelines got much more tangled and difficult to follow as you went along in the text version, which is what inspired them to do the graphic project in the first place.

I feel compelled to buy it, but I have a feeling I would be crazy angry by the time I finished. Civil War doesn’t hold a candle to real politics.

  34. You can read it in report form, or you can read it in comic form, or you can WATCH THE TV MOVIE!

    http://abc.go.com/movies/thepathto911/

I feel compelled to buy it, but I have a feeling I would be crazy angry by the time I finished. Civil War doesn’t hold a candle to real politics.

I do and and I don’t want to read it too. I was angry enough after reading The Cell

  35. There are all sorts of reasons to be angry.

Try Richard Clarke’s Against All Enemies, or Robert Baer’s See No Evil.

  36. It makes you feel guilty about your hobby to have the “real” books piling up on the same coffee table. “I’m a voter; I really need to read this 9/11 report. And also that Invincible hardcover.”

I knew I had a lot of books this week, but I didn’t realize how many of them were my “parking lot” reads. You know? Some books you let sit around a few days, and others you have to stop and read before you do anything else? Half the stuff I bought this week were in the latter category. Had to take a long lunch.

  37. funny u say that. as i was leaving the store earlier today, i saw three people in three different cars reading their loots. man it seemed like there were a lot of big reveals this week, like in ultimate spidey, astonishing, and the roster in jla

  38. My new books are sitting in my bag under my desk at work and I can almost hear them calling to me.

Just a head’s up, hold off on any talk about the inner working of this week’s books until the PoW thread gets updated.

14 books and I have the PoW… whew, it’s going to be a late night…

  39. BATMAN #656 (First Batman I read was O’Neil and Adams, so I’m in.)
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 (First JL of A I read was the Satelite era. Brad’s the man!)
ASTONISHING X-MEN #16 (Kind of wished I’d trade waited this arc. I’ve yet to be astonished.)
ETERNALS #3 (A bit too much re-cycling of ideas from American Gods and Anansi Boys, but at least the pictures are pretty!)
THING IDOL OF MILLIONS TP (Because it’s a shame it got cancelled.)

  40. New comics day will have to wait until tomorrow for me have to finish some LP packaging art for my friends’ band but when I do, it’ll be a pretty good run:

    52 WEEK #16
    BATMAN #656
BATMAN AND THE MAD MONK #1 (maybe, if they’ve got it)
DMZ #10 (if the store has a copy … which it won’t.)
FLASH THE FASTEST MAN ALIVE #3
    JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1
    WONDER WOMAN #2 $2.99
    ASTONISHING X-MEN #16
    DAREDEVIL #88
    ETERNALS #3
HEROES FOR HIRE #1 (Maybe … Getting a little burnt out on Civil War)
    NEW AVENGERS #23
    ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #99
    ULTIMATES ANNUAL #2
    WOLVERINE #45

And, sometimes they get in stuff from the previous week that they didn’t have before, so I’m hoping to find a copy of Phonogram numero uno per this site’s suggestion. And maybe some Astro City back issues … that’s something I’m just now finding out about that sounds really really good.

  41. this thread is making me sad. i’m in fargo on business all week and i won’t be able to get comics until SATURDAY. I want JLofA so bad it hurts!

  42. trapped in Fargo!

    Egads!
