Because YOU demanded it.

“I’m back.”

After watching the first two hours, Ron is convinced that Jack Bauer is now Batman (with guns and no aversion to killing), so I guess that makes this somewhat comics related.

24 is Ron and I’s favorite show on TV. By far. Guess who is gonna suffer because of this? The other big show on at 9pm on Mondays — Heroes. Thanks to DVRs we’ll still watch Heroes, of course, just not live(ish).

I’ll go more in-depth tomorrow, but for now I’ll just say that I love beaten and broken Jack. It adds a whole new layer of complexity to an already super-complex character.

Comments

  1. Yeah touching on the beaten and broken jack thing the scene when Jack was soft on the traitor and than the Assad put a nife in the guy leg was awsome. I also loved the subway bomb scene and the only thing i dont like is Kumar being a terrorist. Sux that im going to have to tape heroes because the only tv in my house with a tape recorder is broken and is only in black and white.O i almost forgot the first episode used the word sacrifice way to much. I dont want to think of jack Bauer as jesus!!!!

  2. Jack’s back! I’m glad my DVR records two shows, or Heroes would be out of luck.

    Things I hated:
That little surfer dude’s ridiculous boy-crush on Kumar.
    Morris
    Milo

    Things I liked:
Peter McNichol as a weasley conservative
    Wayne Palmer
    Dr. Bashir as a kick-ass anti-hero

The great thing about 24 is, none of that will even be in the show by hour 10. It will just be Jack killing new bad guys.

  3. I’m having sort of a Jack Bauer renaissance right now. I thought I hated this show, but it turns out I just had the misfortune of starting it during the “Kim’s caught in a trap… and here comes an angry cougar!” season. (Because… I mean… come on.) My wife has been Netflixing season one this week, and I was surprised to find my resistance melting the more episodes she watched. I may get into this yet.

  4. so ive never watched 24 before… and wasn’t even planning on it tonight but i caught the first 10 minutes and couldn’t stop watching.

  5. The coolest thing about it is that you could catch the first episode of any season and just watch it. There is backstory and season to season continuity(a twentyfourniverse if you will) but not knowing any of that shouldn’t hamper your experience.

I really liked this. It was a great start. Jack Bauer is a really great character in that the more you torture him the cooler he becomes. Tonight with the Chinese thing and the scars and nasty hair things… man that had to suck. And then the Chinese guy said that he hadn’t said a word in 20 months of torture and captivity. He’s the fucking man. Who else could do that? The answer is no one.

This is actually the first season that I’ll be watching weekly rather than on DVD. So far just waiting until tomorrow night is driving me crazy. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

  6. And then the Chinese guy said that he hadn’t said a word in 20 months of torture and captivity. He’s the fucking man. Who else could do that? The answer is no one.

    Batman.

  7. I haven’ watched 24. I’ve tried to but if you don’t start at the beginning you don’t know what’s going on. I started watching it last night and the Rome came on. Had to change it.

  8. The kill count thing is cool

  9. This is actually the first season that I’ll be watching weekly rather than on DVD

    Me too!

Has anybody noticed that for the past couple of seasons, the first few episodes are Jack being asked to return to face “one last crisis”

But oh man, Season Six looks to be amazing!

  10. You may all want to skip DrudgeReport today for fear of possible spoilers.

Or, if you don’t care so much:

    http://www.drudgereport.com/24.htm

  11. Loved it. The fact that Jack is obviously conflicted really lends some weight to the character, a rather positive ethos. Not to say that he won’t still bite a guy’s jugular out to escape or anything, but it really lends credibility to the character.

I may be one of the few, but I actually sort of like the willingness to be a sacrifice sort of thing. Is almost an odd sort of counterpoint to a lot of the violence in the rest of the show, that Jack has principles and things that he considers more important than himself.

I haven’t really watched this since the first season since I don’t really watch much TV, but I think I’ll be sticking around for this year!

  12. Has anybody noticed that for the past couple of seasons, the first few episodes are Jack being asked to return to face “one last crisis”

The thing with 24 is that it’s just really fun and exciting. It is very formulaic and at times ignores it own rules and makes up technology. I can get over it though because it’s so good.

But yes, Jack must always come back one more time.

The government will ask him to sacrifice his life 1-2 times

Jack will go off the grid at least 3 times

Jack will disobey the president at least 3 times

Jack will be arrested by ctu at least twice

Jack will save the day/country/city at least twice with only the help of 1 or 2 people usually Chloe

This will be the first season where Tony won’t be stabbed/shot/choked about the neck and it’s only because he’s dead

At least 3 times they will find a suspect by checking atm survellience tapes

At least 62 times someone will be asked to open a ‘socket’

The government will pursue the wrong man at least twice(first is out of the way)

There are many more but I don’t want to take away from anybody’s enjoyment of it or give anybody the impression that I don’t love it.

  13. My favorite aspect of 24 is how ridiculous and over the top it can be. For example, every cell phone Jack finds on the street is compatible with the CTU mainframe and can conference call with the President at a moment’s notice. In the last season, Jack identified a terrorist’s remote trigger for his explosive vest, then hacked into the terrorist’s radio frequency to listen in on their communications, finally overloading one of the remote triggers to detonate a bomb and eliminate two badguys in one strike . . . all accomplished with his camera phone.

And also Chloe makes the best faces.

  14. Last nights episode was great, but I have the same problem that I’ve had with the show for the last 2-3 years; Someone needs to kill Chloe. Please, for the love of Jebus, someone kill her! And it’s not just the character, but the actress playing her is awful. Err, hate that character. Otherwise great start to a new season.

  15. I love the character that they’ve created with Assad, although when they first showed him, I burst out laughing. I had recently watched Syriana where he plays a muslim who has decided to go nonviolent. I just watched an episode of Season 2 of MI 5 where he plays a muslim who has decided to go nonviolent. When he showed up in 24 last night, I paused the show and said to my wife “Well if you need a former terrorist gone good, I guess the guy to turn to these days is Alexander Sidig”.

    Can’t wait for tonight.

  16. WOW last night was great
time seemed to go to fast, i wanted more
thank g~d they have another 2 hours tonight
jack went lost boys on the one guy and that was f’ing brilliant…

my only problem was he gets free and finds a car with a cell phone charging and then lucky him it has some kind of onstar system… and the car is old enough that he can hot wire it old school style… why not just leave the keys in the car for him too.
i don’t know…that was the only part i thought was a bit far fetched

    >>>Season 2 of MI 5 where he plays a muslim who has decided to go nonviolent. When he showed up in 24 last night, I paused the show and said to my wife “Well if you need a former terrorist gone good, I guess the guy to turn to these days is Alexander Sidig”.< i thought the exact same thing!!! i liked him on DS9 so i'm glad to see him back on tv, and so far i like his character can't wait for 2 more hours tonight!!! side note on the jack kill counter, you know who needs a kill counter.... lana lang on smallville... hello people, shes entering the low 20's... no jack bauer but not bad for someone who started racking up a body count in high school also chloe rocks, leave her be...

  17. Here’s my question. Bigger “OH MY GOD!” moment:

    1. Jack ripping the dude’s jugular out with his teeth.

    2. Assad putting the knife in the other dude’s kneecap?

  18. ripping the dude’s jugular out with his teeth by a longshot.

  19. it’s #1 because it made me go ooooh Lost Boys thank Jebus

  20. I thought #1 was extra grisly, but I am leaning towards #2 for the sheer brilliance of the sound design and the fact that Assad did it relatively slowly.

  21. they were both really cool but I liked 1 for the wtf value

  22. We’re a little less than two hours away from hours 3 and 4 being broadcast on the East Coast and I imagine that there will be some live postings to this thread so any one in other timezones who don’t want to be spoiled are advised to USE CAUTION!.

  23. anyone watching right now?
When Jack carjacked that guy? that was awesome.

  24. stay down

  25. I love how when the white house runs their projections they have those people icons to represents the thousands dead that fill up the screen. sooo dramatic.

  26. Yes nothing tugs the heartstrings like icons and a legend

oh no 65 men’s room door icons will be killed

    what will we do?

  27. did anyone catch that antidrug commercial? The moral of which was apparently that smoking weed will cause you to have your girlfriend stolen by straightedge aliens

  28. the anti-drug commercials are getting pretty good again…that one was great…I saw another one a few days ago that cracked me up – I forget what it was though…

  29. Right about now you guys are getting to see the best OMG moment on 24 history. I wished I hadn’t downloaded the torrent…*sigh*

  30. aw crap curtis – why did you have to do that?

and why did Jack have to shoot for the neck? A shot to the bullet proof vest would have knocked him off his ass

and why did they play Lord of the Rings music while Jack puked?

oh and holy crap they blew a nuke.

and am I bad person cause while I’m watching the reactions to the nuke I thought “wow, Karen Hayes is looking alot hotter this season, even for an old chick?” I think I am.

  31. i think that waiting until next monday may literally kill me

  32. she’s a gilf

  33. First Animal Man now Curtis all my favorite suporting characters are kicking the bucket i havent been this sad since they killed Tony last season.

  34. Here’s a crazy thought
Tony used to be the guy that got shot in the neck every season and now he’s dead
    is curtis definitely dead?
    maybe he’s the new tony

  35. Curtis isn’t dead…just my opinion.

  36. he’s just sleeping

i just found the first 12 minutes of the next episode and it’s good

  37. i havent been this sad since they killed Tony last season.

I’m still not over Tony. Just ask Conor.

  38. Tony was a great character

  39. Yes… Yes he was.

  40. so is Curtis but I haven’t seen a body yet so I won’t say was

  41. Who the fuck is going to buy a DVD of the first four hours of this season?

  42. are you talking about the ones available for download?
    They’re probably screeners

  43. My dad said the same thing that Conor just said

  44. There was a commercial for a DVD set of the four hour season premiere that will be available at stores tomorrow.

  45. aaaah

  46. I was thinking that the biggest leap of logic so far this season is not the magical cell phone that Jack found in that random car he stole (Jack’s stolen car count: 2) but that America elected a President with a shaved head and a goatee.

  47. I just finished watching it and I can’t believe where this season is going. If this is the end of hour four and it’s like this, imagine the end of hour 22!!!

  48. America elected a President with a shaved head and a goatee.

    middle america loves a carnie

  49. don’t forget Mystery Sister when putting together the unbelievable list. 6 seasons of Palmer family and I can’t recall her being mentioned but there’s no more David or Sherry so hey David and Wayne had a sister.
the Palmers are like the Kennedys of the 24niverse. expect to see women floating in the lake any time now.

  50. America elected a President with a shaved head and a goatee.

And he’s about 20 years younger than any other president has ever been.

  51. And he’s about 20 years younger than any other president has ever been.

    D.B. Woodside – 37 years old
President Kennedy – 44 years old.

  52. D.B. Woodside – 37 years old

minimum age to be us president-40

  53. From the Constitution of the United States, Article II, Section 1, Clause 5:
No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States at the time of the adoption of this constitution, shall be eligible to the office of president; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

  54. i stand corrected
going to the source doc jeez

  55. Should anyone want to catch up, Amazon is running a 24 hour sale on 24 the Season 1-5 DVDs:

    https://www.amazon.com/24-Seasons-1-5/dp/B000JJ6K1A/ref=pd_ys_qtk_rvi/002-6281148-2704026

  56. that’s literally 5 straight days of watching. Crazy.

  57. I’ve often wanted to watch an entire season in the span of 24 hours but my schedule isn’t exactly compatible with that

  58. FX did a 24 hours of 24 one holiday weekend, and i have to tell you its quite a trip.
    all that jack…

i’ve seen some stations try and do this but ever since that first time, now they block off 3 hours for infomercials… so it’s not the same

  59. http://www.tvsquad.com/2007/01/16/kiefer-sutherland-sets-jack-bauer-on-fire/

Sutherland reportedly took a prototype of a Jack Bauer action figure for a night out on the town. But plastic Jack didn’t fare so well after 11 p.m., when Kiefer & Co. started torturing our beloved CTU agent, including setting the action figure on fire.

“We got up the next day and there was this puddle of wax,” Sutherland is quoted as saying.

  60. Ron, I saw that on a different site at work today. (http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/sutherland%20set%20fire%20to%20doll%20prototype_1018941)
My favorite quote was: “We started torturing him around 11 o’clock at night, and, by two o’clock in the morning, we had set him on fire in the parking lot.”

  61. Curtis is dead, that scene was so powerful, with Jack crawling over to the tree and just curling up into a ball. It just felt real, like if someone had realy just killed one of their best friends that that’s what he/she would do.

    Spoiler:
I rented the premier DVD, and the first 12 minutes of the next episode show that a nuke going off in Valencia is enough to shake Jack out of his remorse, he’s back, and the death toll is about to skyrocket.

  62. http://www.foxstore.com/detail?item=2703

that is some crazy forward thinking shit Fox is doing.

  63. I’m moving the 24 talk to the forums. The Heroes talk will stay here.
