The Best of the Week in Covers – 03.27.2013

“Jeff City. I heard tell once of a Jefferson City lawyer who had a comic cover that’d wake him each morning crying out, ‘Today is the day the world shall end, as scripture has foretold.’ And uh…one day the lawyer shot him for the sake of peace and quiet, I presume, thus fulfilling, for the comic cover at least, his prophecy!”

Young Avengers_3

Young Avengers #3
Cover by Jamie McKelvie

The perfect lighting with the perfect gel. The perfect crop of the composition. The perfectly modern representation of the youthful American hero. At the center of it all, the perfect character for 2013.

The Massive_10

The Massive #10
Cover by John Paul Leon

I suspect that John Paul Leon has hoodies nicer than my best suit. His covers don’t so much ooze style because oozing is unseemly. No, they simply define elegance and polish in keeping with Brian Wood’s crisp storytelling mode. This is the GQ version of that macaroni collage you made back in the day.

Deadpool_Killustrated_3

Deadpool: Killustrated #3
Cover by Mike Del Mundo

As opposed to Jacob Marley, this ghostly vision of Deadpool probably is “an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato.” There may well be more of gravy than of grave about this image, but keep on pouring, Mr. Del Mundo.

Time Warp_1_Full

Time Warp #1
Cover by Eduardo Risso

Only the Doctor himself can endure lifetimes of temporal misadventure without developing the permanent scowl on ol’ sourpuss up there. This one’s all in the posture and expression of our beleaguered traveler. There are also halberds present, and that’s one of my checkboxes.

Batman_Incorporated_9

Batman, Incorporated #9
Cover by Chris Burnham

This whole Requiem thing is more than a bit of a downer, inspiring a number of ill-conceived, maudlin portraits. But this image is particularly haunting, even melancholy in its simplicity. All it takes is the right vantage point. Typically, an upshot like this would result in the subject appearing large and impressive. Yet, here, the Batman looks impossibly small. Overwhelmed. Culpable.

X-Men Legacy_8

X-Men Legacy #8
Cover by Mike Del Mundo

Mike Del Mundo is generating some of the most inventive covers for this series, each of them tapped into Legion’s fascinating mental landscape.

The Unwritten_47

The Unwritten #47
Cover by Yuko Shimizu

Mike Romo returns to the world of Unwritten, hamming it up a bit, to be quite honest. In all seriousness, this is such an evocative study in texture and light. Even the negative space is compelling.

East of West_1

East of West #1
Cover by Jonathan Hickman, Nick Dragotta

A clean approach to the down and dirty.

Comments

  1. Great covers this week

  2. The I,Vampire cover was one of my favorites this week – but I can’t argue with the choices here.

  3. A really good selection of covers this week, especially Unwritten & Batman Inc. I was also particularly struck by the Gamora variant for Guardians — wish that I could have picked it up but my shop asking $35 for it . . . oh well, the Skottie Young was a nice substitute . . .

  4. I’m not reading Legacy, but Del Mundo is absolutely killing it on those covers. What a creative mind.

I couldn’t believe that was Risso on the Time Warp cover. I can see it now, but I never would’ve guessed. Someone’s certainly evolving.

And the East of West … I mean c’mon … It’s Hickman. (Yes, I know it’s Dragotta’s artwork. But the design has Hickman all over it.) The point blank perspective is a tough one to nail down, but when I look at that cover I feel like ducking.

  5. Miss America representing the Straight-Edge. Awesome.

    • She’s actually not. Kieron Gillen said on Twitter that it’s just the stamp from the club that they were in in the issue.

    • Bummer. When I saw this I was hoping Gillen’s coverage of young superhumans involvement in music culture might touch on the hardcore scene. If Marvel Boy listens to 60’s soul, why can’t Ms. America listen to Youth Of Today? *sigh*

    • @Conor Odd…considering the context of the image. Aggro straight edgers is the first thing I thought too. Looks like she’s throwing a punch, and that looks like a glass of booze.

I’m glad Gillen said that’s the situation though. I’m “straight edge” myself, but I am no fan of the violent little shits at shows. Live and let live.

    • This probably just shows my age and how out of touch I am but why does an X on her hand mean straight edge. Back in my twenty’s I remember having X’s put on your hand by clubs but and sometimes it had to do with people being too young to drink, granted though I was not real close to anyone who was straight edge.

    • It’s due to the reasons you mentioned. Straight Edge folks would put the X’s on their hands themselves, basically as a badge that they don’t drink, etc. It became something they co-opted.

  6. Yeah, I’m certainly no advocate any of that hardline unbottled violence firestorm bullshit. But I also wouldn’t mind having a straight-edger superheroine in the marvel universe.
