‘The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!’ Canceled; ‘Marvel’s Avengers Assemble’ To Replace it in 2013

In news that will surprise no one who participates in our weekly discussions of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!, it would appear that Marvel Animation has finally confirmed its cancellation with a brief note in a press release.

The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! won’t be renewed for the 3rd Season. Marvel Animation will present their newly developed series Marvel’s Avengers Assemble in 2013.

What will reportedly replace the fan favorite show?

From the promo art above it would appear that the new show is going to hew closely to the world established in the Marvel Studios movie universe. At least from outward appearances. It’s hard to say for sure until we see some actual animation (or animation stills).

As I said at the top of this piece, the news of the death of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! should come as no surprise, we’ve been talking about it for a month now. As I said before, I had heard from someone who would know that Marvel Animation was ending The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! in favor of a new Avengers cartoon that would be fully under Marvel Animation’s control, just as Ultimate Spider-Man currently is. I did not hear from this person anything beyond that simple fact; nothing about the tone of the new Avengers cartoon, and nothing about the popular rumor that it will exist in the same world as Ultimate Spider-Man.

This is sad news for superhero animation fans. With The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!, we finally had a Marvel cartoon that could be stand alongside just about anything that Warner Bros. and DC had produced. It’s intricate plotting, stellar character work, and big action drew from all over the Marvel Universe and evoked a “classic Marvel” feel that has eluded the comic books for a while now.

Marvel’s Avengers Assemble has some mighty big boots to fill.

Comments

  1. Sad to hear, I looked fwd to watching it with my 5yr old every week. Hopefully the reboot will be just as good.

  2. From a business perspective, it makes sense to me why Marvel is doing this. Still doesn’t change the fact though that this Avengers show was stellar and will be missed.

  3. “Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” is the first Marvel cartoon in many years that I’ve actively sought out and watched. I hope the new show can at least come close to the quality of the cancelled show.

  4. I loved the animation, but the voice’s were terrible. The dude who did Tony Stark should never do another superhero voice over gig. He sounds like a nasally fat guy, and I looked him up and sure enough, I was right.

    • I thought he did a great job. Sure he sounded like a blend of Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr, but it was cool. So what if he’s a fat dude?

  5. This is so disappointing. I love Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! Hopefully Avengers Assemble can match the quality.

And I know it’s super early to say this, but if that’s the line-up, I kind of wish they used it as an opportunity to make the group a little less testosterone heavy and throw the Wasp or Carol Danvers in there. That being said, I’m a sucker for the Falcon and Captain America teaming up so it’s hard for me to complain.

  6. so, all the guys from the movie plus FALCON?! i at least hope that he gets into all the roommate hijinx with cap that i’m so used to.

  7. Yay! Falcon’s on the team.
Does that mean he may be in the movie sequel? Hmmm.

  8. For old school Marvel fans, TAEMH was likely the cartoon that they had been waiting for their entire lives. The shear number of C and D-list characters that made appearances on the show was probably enough to warm the cockles of their jaded fanboy hearts. I know it did mine.

That said, the show was far from perfect. While the characterization was usually good, the character development was often poor. The plots were shallow, with most episodes revolving around characters fighting each other. One could argue that this is very much in the Marvel milieu (big fights, plot driven), but I think Marvel can do better, as shown by the movie “The Avengers”.

Personally, I think Marvel Animation has an opportunity to have their cake and eat it too. It is an opportunity to showcase all their characters and tell great stories.

  9. I miss the Loeb who didn’t make a mess of things I enjoy.

Where is the Long Halloween Loeb?

  10. Thats a shame, i had been watching em on Netflix and they were indeed a ton of fun.

  11. 🙁

Hopefully the new show is good, but I really, really liked EMH.

  12. Does Marvel have some weird 2 season rule with all their cartoons? “No matter how good, & how much people love the show, we must cancel after 2 seasons, & replace it with a new version”

    • yeah i remember Loeb talking about that on Word Balloon…the animation world tends to view things in terms of syndication…so when there are enough episodes they move on to a new series, and replay the older series. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that kids grow up and out of cartoons? (but then come back to them as adults)

    • @wallythegreenmonster: That’s an interesting theory, especially in light of how they used to do that in the comics for the revolving readership of kids as they grew up (i.e. re-telling the origin every few years). I imagine a significant majority of young superhero fans today were introduced to the characters in the cartoons first. Now the question is how many transition from the cartoons to the comics?

    • This season ends kind of on a cliffhanger so I don’t think it was really planned this way.

  13. Just plain stupid if you ask me.

  14. Sad to hear this, but not surprised (even without seeing the discussions) at all. I will give the new one a chance when it comes out, but as stated it has a lot to live up to.

  15. I get that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is a good show and is beloved by fans, so cancellation sounds like sad news. But I think people are missing the part that this is a move that gives Marvel more control over their characters — it sounds kind of like the animation equivalent of the X-Men movie franchise reverting back to Marvel Studios control.

I know that having Marvel Studios running things is no guarantee of greatness, but they’ve got a pretty solid track record so far, so I see this as great news.

The king is dead, long live the king, you know?

  16. There trying to appeal to more kids. At least that’s what this site mentioned for Spectacular Spider-man. Which had quality unlike any other.

  17. Booooh! The show was awesome as is. I don’t care for Hawkeye with sunglasses. I don’t care if it looks more like the movies. If it’s as silly and breaking the fourth wall three times per show like Ultimate Spider-Man does, it’ll suck and we all know it.

Damn marketing and cash-hungry CEO’s who only see profit and not quality.

I know I’m judging this fast, but Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is a love-letter to fanboys and a good throwback to the Lee/Kirby era (at least the first season was like that). Now, all I see is “The Avengers movie made a shit-load of money, let’s milk these kids dry!”… Shame!

    • This was in the works before the success of the movie and is in line with the direction Marvel has been going for years.

    • @KillTheG1mp = . can we blame a business for capitalizing on the success on the third highest grossing movie worldwide? It’s so so so early. Who says they’ll break the fourth wall? This may take place in the USM universe, maybe, but it’s not Spider-Man, it’s the Avengers. They could use a completely different set of personalities and tone. And this is being done BY Marvel. There’s bound to be fanboy service and throwback. After all, the movie had a lot of Lee/Kirby in it.

    • You are right, of course. I guess I just hate it when something’s really good and they choose to make it something else entirely just because they can… If something ain’t broke, don’t fix it, you know!?

Anyway, we’ll see if it succeeds or not. I know I’ll watch it for sure. I just hope I’ll like it as much as I do watching A:EMH.

  18. I can only hope the quality is as good as A:EMH’s. As much as i like USM, i don’t want an Avengers animated project with that tone. But we’ll see. At least we got two great seasons of a really cool show. Sometimes, we don’t even get that.

    • I agree, it shouldn’t be the same as USM. I liked the fact that all of the big 4 superhero cartoons (AEMH, USM, GL and YJ) had different looks and feels and tones.

And you are right, sometimes we just need to be thankful for what we got.

  19. It was a day unlike any other….Sad sad sad.

Until Pixar animates “Marvel Tales” every Saturday morning, I’ll wear a black armband for EMH.

  20. This really sucks. Even the Spider-Man in The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Was better then the new Ultimate Spider-Man. He was kissing Cap’s ass. But many heroes do in the MU. Oh well. Here’s hoping for something awesome.

  21. I was kinda hoping they would do New Avengers instead. Only because i want new characters as the main ones.

  22. I think Marvel is making a huge mistake. Avengers Earth Mightiest Heroes is a great cartoon and I think they will screw up the new version.

  23. cap better be the leader and iron mans comic relief

  24. “This is sad news for superhero animation fans. With The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!, we finally had a Marvel cartoon that could be stand alongside just about anything that Warner Bros. and DC had produced. It’s intricate plotting, stellar character work, and big action drew from all over the Marvel Universe and evoked a “classic Marvel” feel that has eluded the comic books for a while now.”

This paragraph sums up how I feel. This is a terrible decision and incredibly depressing.

  25. Jeph Loeb has a pretentious spelling for his first name and he is a dick for this boneheaded move. Really stupid.

  26. As long as they continue what EMH and the movie started to do. Feed my cosmic mojo and I’ll be there.

  27. Quite simply….. I don’t like Jeph Loeb’s style…… Of course I’ll give it a go but………

  28. The current show clashes hugely with the Ultimate Spider-man show – my daughter is confused as hell about it. It’s not just different appearances and voices – the tone is radically different. USM wants to be Community or Adventure Time; TAEMH wants to be a proper drama on top of deliciously crunchy fanservice and often succeeds. USM is just not my thing at all unfortunately so not looking forward to more in that vein.

Of course they could go in a totally different direction and have 616 and Ultimate universes be separate in animation as well but that would just be crazy, wouldn’t it.

  29. I understand the reasoning, but I will definitely miss A:EMH. It’s a fine, fine show.

  30. Yeah! I hope it’s even better!

  31. Why am I having nightmares about Avengers Assemble being crammed full of lame jokes and annoying voices?

  32. dc’s young justice is better than any marvel cartoon out there period.

    • I have to agree. Avengers was ok i hate how they underpowered Hulk. They made Thor like he is invincible. Young Justice shits on all marvel latest cartoon series. Every time they create a new series they made the main character younger and younger it pisses me off. The next spider-man will be in elementary. I blame it all on disney. I’m still waiting on marvel to top the 90s x-men and spiderman animated series. I hate the ultimate spider-man series.

The only shows i like from DC are Young Justice, Justice league and unlimted, Static, and 90s Batman. Young Justice is for everybody young and old. They not just trying to appear to one audience.

  33. Very, very disappointed. But I will admit that season two of Avengers was a bit disappointing compared to the first — mostly because they seemed to squeeze out Hank Pym in order to play up the characters from the films. And it appears that the new toon will be more of that. If it’s a bad as Ultimate Spider-Man, I think it will be a done-in-one.

    • Yeah man Ultimate Spider-Man is pure shit. I swear if they made the whole cast young and dumb i hope it flops. I grew up with characters with common sense.
