November 28, 2011 3:57 pm Xavier opening and running his own bar / nightclub for mutants needs to be a real comicbook. Now that he's off on his own in the X-Universe, it'd be a perfect time to return Xavier to his partying, ladies-man roots by way of mid-life crisis.
November 11, 2011 1:44 pm What about Invincible's Omni-Man? He comes from a planet of uniformly moustached supermen. To his people, not being able to grow appropriate facial hair would be seen as a genetic aberration or weakness and is therefore grounds for execution. So I think you'd love the planet Viltrum, Molly, it's Movember all year round: UNDER PENALTY OF DEATH.
October 27, 2011 10:02 am I've just finished reading a few studies on cultural patterns over the past two hundred years, and while they're focused exclusively on England there are a few interesting points made that add to this discussion. Firstly, modern day media such as comic books, television and the internet have not brought about some "epidemic" of shorter attention spans. It's fascinating to look at the Victorian Age criticisms of penny dreadfuls and the emerging form of the magazine, particularly the boy's magazine / pulp magazine that the comic book was born from; they make exactly the kind of statements about the effect of consumer culture (although obviously this term wasn't used) on the individual consumer as this article makes. What the article is talking about is by no means whatsoever a new phenomenon. Secondly, these books collectively make a pretty good case for why these statements are being made more often today than they once were. Simply put, with the growth of the culture industry and particularly the advent of the internet A LOT more people are writing and talking intellectually about the cultural produce we consume. It is not the "effect" that has grown in size, but the number of people that are capable of noticing and talking about it. Human beings have always had a surprisingly short attention span, a fact that we've never liked to admit. Consumer culture has always been blamed by a minority for this, but ultimately it is by no means the cause of our inattentiveness or our rampant need to consume. Instead, the relationship between culture and its consumers is merely the focus point by which these ingrained human traits become most transparent.
October 25, 2011 9:11 am *sigh* hehe you just had to bring up the Sentry again, didn't you? I'm worried that if Marvel realizes people are still talking about the Sentry, they'll get the bright idea to bring him back.
October 20, 2011 12:46 pm It depends. All of these characters seem pretty unlikeable from the cruel and selfish ways that they use their power. If it's like every other horror movie these days where the main characters are partying knuckleheads that spend the entire run time giving us new reasons to hate them then there's no way that this movie will work. However, the end of the trailer makes me think that the one boy going psycho will drive the others to finally turn themselves around as people and come together as a counter-force for good. If we get the latter this could end up being something special, though I'm still hesitant.
October 4, 2011 12:03 pm Ouch :( I feel the same as I did when Bone (probably the worst title to bring up in regards to this article's subject) was delayed back in the day. When the quality of a comic is so high, I'm willing to support its creative team in the interim period between one issue and the next, no matter how long that turns out to be.
September 30, 2011 3:56 pm I definitely preferred Superman #1 more than Justice League. One gave me a complete story with enough plot threads left dangling to keep me around for the next issue, while the other felt like the writer was purposefully trying to divide a complete story in to as many issues as possible. If DC is going to get serious about making its books accessible to new readers then decompressed storytelling needs to be thrown out. I'm not saying that multi-issue arcs are a bad thing, but when the very first story told in your big relaunch demands that the buyer come back and pay three more times over the course of as many months? It's really no wonder that sales are dwindling. Justice League #1 and in fact all the first issues of the relaunch should have been one and done accessible stories showcasing their titular characters and concepts, baiting the readers before giving them the hook and allowing the creative teams an extra month or two to better plan the direction that they want their work to take.
September 30, 2011 3:39 pm I disagree. Between Green Arrow, OMAC, Static Shock, Mister Terrific, Superboy, Blue Beetle, Captain Atom, Nightwing, Supergirl, Aquaman, Blackhawks, The Flash, The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men and Superman the new 52 has plenty of choice for younger readers. While I have trouble seeing the New 52 as a reboot due to a lot of the old continuity being intact, the majority of the new titles are solid jumping on points for anyone looking to get in to comics.
September 26, 2011 9:53 am Tudyk would make for a great Buddy btw, good call.
September 26, 2011 9:52 am She's supposed to be an everywoman, sure, but this doesn't have to translate to her looks. A good actress should be convincing in any role, Charlize Theron in Monster is a great example of this. Hendricks made for a very down to earth Lois in All-Star Superman and has done some pretty convincing terms in bit-parts on tv in the past (before she blew up following Firefly and Mad Men), that's why I think she'd be great for the role.
