What more can be said about this series? At the end of the first arc all I can say is that I am blown away. Jason Aaron has crafted a tale that is simply magnificent. I found myself really enthralled by the motivations of Gorr the God Butcher. His cold, calculating schemes send shivers down my spine and seem to suck the hope out of the very cosmos with his voice. Then, when all seems hopeless, the moments with Thor bring all the optimism shooting back. Aaron writes him in such a way that you think, "There's a god. A being from which to rally behind." The dialogue is fantastic and I really feel like Aaron has honed in on Thor's voice perfectly. As if that all wasn't enough, Esad Ribic's art is enough to just keep me from reading on because I'm gawking at the art saying, "WOW." The opening sequence with Gorr hunting the elder god was so eerie, yes serene. Following that, the page where young Thor cuts of Gorr's arm from under his arm was excruciatingly real. You could see, almost feel, the pain in the The God Butcher. With so many other top notch books coming out this week, it was hard to pick a favorite but ultimately Thor: God of Thunder captivated me more than the others and had me looking over the pages again and again.
