"Who knew we would one day be fond of those horrible days of war..." Although I read the first hardcover of this run on New Avengers, I haven't really felt the need to continue with it. I have also not been interested at all in AvX, so I haven't really read any of the tie-ins. However, while at the comic store today, I decided to give this issue a try (mainly because I saw the first page double page spread), and after reading it, I am glad I did. This issue was based around a meeting of Captain America, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Xavier, and Reed Richards and the topic of discussion was, of course, the Phoenix Five. What made this issue so amazing for me was the great character moments for all five characters. Examples include Cap's emphasis on loyalty towards his fellow Invader Namor, Xavier using his mind reading powers to throw the lies that the men at the meeting were saying back at them, and Reed Richard's fascination with doing the math and actually kind of SUPPORTING the Phoenix Five. I found the discussion between these men to be really fascinating and it also brought me up to speed on what is happening in Marvel right now, which is an added bonus. Finally, Namor's appearance at the end and the discussion that followed was truly heartbreaking and reminded me of how strong the bond is between Cap and Namor. I REALLY liked the art by Mike Deodato. I found every panel with Cap in it to be beautiful and his Invaders flashback scene at the beginning was truly amazing! I would gladly read a monthly Invaders book with him as the artist. When I finally put the issue down, I felt that Bendis and Deodato had put a lot of heart into this issue. With the constant craziness and strangeness of AvX, it was nice for someone like me to read a tie-in and not feel bogged down by the overall event. While Spider-Men was my pick this week, New Avengers was my second choice and satisfied me with a great issue of a Marvel comic that I know I will go back an reread in the future.
