I'm a sucker for animals. I adored all of The Pet Avengers and can't wait for the on going series. So of course I picked this up and I was just as enchanted by this as I was by the Pet Avengers.
The art was fabulous and spot on for this story, with all the animals clearly resembling their real-life breeds while still portraying each animal's unique personality. The art and painting reminded me of the Bunnicula books, which I assure you is the a high compliment. Not too cartoonish, and not too realistic.
I faltered a little bit with the story since it is very clear that something proceeded this issue (a short story in an anthology I plan on hunting down and devouring called "Dark Horse Book of Haunting") and I must say I would have been completely happy to pay a few extra dollars if they had included the first story with this new issue. I mean, Ace was bitten by a werewolf? When? Why isn't anyone concerned about Fluffy's humans missing her/him? I think the impact of the Frog Demon would have resounded a smidgen more if we had known what had come before it. There is something to be said for dropping us right in the middle of a new world like with CHEW but at least we got a little "Here's the world where Chicken is outlawed and this cop can tell the history of whatever he eats. No, really." Summary pages may be for those who aren't paying enough attention, but how many of us have read and vividly remembered a story in an anthology from 2003? If not a summary page why not use the editorial citations they used to do in the Silver Age Comics? You know "*See Issue 67 of Cats for the end of this story"? But even with my bafflement I enjoyed the animal interactions and the implied history. Clearly this is a world that can be just as expansive and fascinating as Mike Mignola's Hellboy universe.
I did wonder at the font choice as well. If they were going for whimsy well... Okay that's cool, but the very mature and apparently magical(?!) dogs probably don't want to be whimsical. Plus if we're getting right down to it, animals fighting supernatural monsters is pretty damn whimsical on its own without having wacky uneven fonts.
That being said I shall excuse myself to go hunt down the first story, and patiently wait for the next issue. And maybe read Pet Avengers again and watch Homeward Bound.
