So, I've never written a review before, but I just had to after reading
this issue. Let's get it out on the table up front: I loved this
issue!
We'll start with the main story. There was excitement and action, a bit of mystery and intrigue, and even some introspection into what makes Superman super. I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of Merino's artwork, but it got the job done and I was even impressed with how he handled Doomsday in a few panels. I really like how he made Steel look too. Woods was solid, but I can see how some people don't like his style. Overall I liked how he handled Luthor in this series and I will miss that shit-eating grin he always wore when Woods drew him. I think what made this issue for me though was the dialogue. The way Lex talked down to Superman, the poison you could feel in his voice as he showed Superman all the pain he had lived through, this is why Paul Cornell is so good. He writes such good back and forth between characters that we have seen face off a thousand times that he makes it feel new. I was worried when I saw the next arc looks to be a standard "beat 'em up" with Doomsday (and honestly it still sounds cheesy as hell), but I'll stick with it for more of Cornell's patented dialogue.
Story: 5/5 Art: 5/5
I do want to comment on the back up features because they really brought an extra value to this comic (as they should with a $6 price tag).
Life Support: Lindelof and Sook bring a stellar tale that almost brought a tear to my eye. Lindelof cranks the emotion up full force and Sook brings such expressiveness to his characters that you can't help but feel their sadness (the reflection of Jor-El's furrowed brow in that orb gives me chills). This was a beautiful story about a father's love, but not the father I was expecting.
Story: 5/5 Art: 5/5
Autobiography: The next one let me down a bit. I mean, it was good, but there wasn't much to it. Don't get me wrong, its a dense read for 3 pages and it has some fun ideas to play with too. But Dini has given me some awesome Superman and this doesn't meet the mark. I think it might have helped to have a different artist. Silva is good, but can't carry the whole thing.
Story: 3/5 Art: 4/5
Friday Night in the 21st Century: Then we have the Legion having a pizza party. Not bad, but not too interesting. There's really not much more to say than that. Nothing too exciting, but the double page spread of the legion at the Kent home is cute.
Story: 4/5 Art: 5/5
The Incident: I really liked this one. I know tons of people are taking issue with Superman renouncing his citizenship, but I thought the story was a beautiful was to show Superman as more than just a guy who can hit things. It depicts him as a modern day MLK or Gandhi. I feel like this is what JMS thought "Grounded" would read like. Sepulveda's art is really good, too (especially when showcasing Superman's powers). If I had one complaint, it would be the incredibly cheesy ending.
Story: 5/5 Art: 5/5
Only Human: The last one was a much different approach. I think it was handled very well and I actually enjoyed the story. I was impressed by how expressive Camp's art was for just being storyboards. Donner's story is fun and I would love to see this as an actual episode of a show or an animated short (maybe before Snyder's reboot like the old Looney Tunes? that would be awesome, but I know it would never happen).
Story: 4/5 Art: 5/5
I really enjoyed the issue as a whole. Well worth the cover price for 96 pages. It was a nice wrap up for Luthor's story, some awesome back-up stories, and not a single ad in sight! I can't wait to see where Cornell takes things!

can you edit reviews? the numbers are not adding up.
Gah! Thanks, I fixed it.
Great first review, more please. Tiny thing, the art on the screenplay was Matt Camp, Derek Hoffman was co-writing – I guess he’s Mr Donner’s current assistant now Geoff Johns has a proper job 😉
Did you like Brian Stelfreeze’s pin-up? I loved it.
I thought the pin-up was great. Really captured the different styles through Superman’s history! And I fixed the name in the last part. Hopefully my next review won’t have so many technical errors… I may do one for Detective soon if I have time. I am loving that book!
