The Best of the Week in Covers – 10.05.2011

Covers. They make your heart sing. Groovy.

House of Mystery #42 cover by Esao Andrews

Can you become unthirsty? Not quenched, but actually unthirsty? I think cobwebs and a rat and a sad little house will do that to your salivary glands. This concept of “Three for the Road” seems a fitting and poetic sendoff for the series, zeroing in on that way station bar and a ghostly old nexus of a house.

O.M.A.C. #2 cover by Keith Giffen

This is where the fun lives right now. Amazing Man and O.M.A.C. doing what they do in the ruins of a diner. If you’re gonna throw in for a massive smackdown, doing it the Kirby way makes the most sense.

Severed #3 cover by Attila Futaki

I’m a sucker for this torn canvas motif, but really it’s these elegant monotone  renderings of early 1900s America that get me. We’ve already seen a pair of pastoral scenes and now we’ve migrated to the big city, which still feels so humble and quaint. And lurking just beneath the surface, a bona fide bogeyman.

Turok Son of Stone #4 cover by Raymond Swanland

I think we’re going the wrong way. We should turn around right now. If Turok of all people is running, we should get going too. I love these covers that hurl us into the fray and scream with tremendous velocity.

Animal Man #2 cover by Travel Foreman

This will put you off lunchmeat for a couple days at least. The idea of this tumorous mass of life swallowing up Buddy and his daughter is so perfectly apt for the issue. The Red is encroaching on their lives, and their place in the composition is appropriately claustrophobic.

Comments

  1. That Men of War cover made me do a double take!

  2. That House of Mystery cover makes me want to check the series out, ironically it is the last issue of the title.

  3. For me, honorable mention goes to the Schism cover and Action Comics. Schism has such a dramatic composition and the lighting is so amazing (it’s even better that it’s provided by a sentinel) and I love seeing Superman in a position we’re not used to seeing him in.

  4. Schism #5 was my favorite this week

  5. Severed and Animal Man really got me. That Severed cover makes me want to hide under the covers.

  6. Many cool covers this week. Definitely the best Severed cover so far. I liked Swamp Thing’s cover the most for the symmetry and awesome plant life. Action Comics and Animal man were really good too.

  7. The cover for Detective Comics #2 was pretty great.

  8. Severed cover was my favorite in a strong batch!

  9. Glad to see OMAC made the list: a true comic fan is mandated by galactic law to LOVE the Kirby revival. As for the Animal Man, can you measure emotional reaction in bile and mouth water?

  10. I especially like how the numbering on the Animal Man issue defaulted.

  11. That Animal Man cover is some disturbing shit. I’ve kept it at the bottom of my stack from this week.

  12. Finally! Esao Andrews has been doing incredible covers for years. I’ll miss his work. Does he do anything else?

  13. No mention of Men Of War’s beautiful cover?

  14. I’ve enjoyed the writing and art for O.M.A.C. quite a bit so far, but cover really doesn’t seem like anything special. It looks more like interior art. Maybe that’s part of the nostalgia?

  15. The Animal Man cover would have 1000x better had they left all the text out at the bottom. Between the barcode and the arc title, the art is almost ruined.
