PREVIEW: Superman Beyond #1

After last week’s announcement of a 5 day a week lineup for DC’s new line of comics released digital first, we can begin go start seeing more and more content from DC Comics available digitally before print.  Building on the already established line of Beyond comics, such as Batman Beyond and Justice League Beyond, DC Comics kicks off Superman Beyond with the first digital issue available later today on the DC Digital applications.

Superman Beyond #1 focuses on the Superman of the future, set in the Beyond continuity and is written by J.T. Krul with art by Howard Porter and Livesay.  Below is DC’s complete description of Superman Beyond along with a sneak peek at 3 pages from the first issue, on sale later today.

SUPERMAN BEYOND

The Man of Tomorrow returns home to an unfamiliar City of Tomorrow patrolled by super-powered police officers. With almost all of his friends and loved ones gone, he wonders if Superman has a place in this new world. But time and death hold no meaning for his greatest enemy who has set a plan in motion to destroy the Man of Steel once and for all.

This book is part of the ongoing digital-first BEYOND series (BATMAN BEYOND, JUSTICE LEAGUE BEYOND, and print collection BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED).

Comments

  1. I’ve been enjoying the other Beyond books so i’ll give this a shot. For .99 cents I’ll try most things.

  2. @Bryce31 I have 99 cents…. Also, last time you checked what?! Now I need to buy this too, just to find out what he says.

  3. i love the entire strategy behind this new line. I think we as a comic community really need to support this. 99 cent digital comics is what so many of us have been demanding for years….they’re listening and willing to give it a try, so lets make it a success! ……also i hope the stories are really good and worth supporting. I’m very optimistic though.

The creators and samples i’ve seen so far look pretty cool.

    • @wallythegreenmonster – I think you’re right. This digital strategy by DC may well be the perfect blueprint moving forward. The price is similar to that of a typical app which has demonstrated to be viable in the market place.

    • with all the price point complaining thats going around, i’m surprised we’re not seeing more high five-ing and excitement over a big 2 publisher offering digital superhero comics for 99 cents….

which leads me to my hypothesis that sometimes comic fans enjoy bitching about comics more than the comics themselves! haha

How dare you sir! Those are fighting words!…no, no I kid. Who loves ya, baby?

//winks and sucks on his lollipop

  4. A Superman as an old man comic? Superman with grey temples!? I’m so there. I’ve been waiting for a Superman with grey temples book since Infinity Inc #7!

    • @MattKelly – totally forgot about that Superman. Nice reference to an awesome comic series by Thomas and Ordway. That made my day!

    • Glad I could lend a hand! This issue was in the “first batch” of comics I read as a kid. To me, an alternate universe where the JSA’s kids were running around, Superman was old and Batman was dead wasn’t a confusing, foreign concept- it was just how things were! And I’ll admit it, I’m a bit sad that this new Earth 2 series won’t follow the same formula. But we can’t live in the past, right?

  5. Both Marvel and DC are definitely embracing the digital format.
I’d love it if the model became:
    – Digital only comics for 99 cents
    – Print and digital comic download-code for $2.99 – $3.99
