Oh, thank Heaven for 7-Eleven: Marvel Comics Return To News Stands

Newsarama is reporting that Marvel Comics is making a bold move, returning to a place where once upon a time comic books were a common sight: the local 7-Eleven.

For years people have said that comics need to get back to the news stands (okay, 7-Eleven technically isn’t a news stand, but you know what I mean) if they ever hope to recapture even a fraction of the mass audience they used to enjoy. While I don’t think that news stand distribution is the magic bullet, it certainly couldn’t hurt to put comics in a place where more eyeballs can see them.

I think that Marvel has to look at this as a long term strategy. They have to look at this as a chance to get kids hooked and have it pay off in 5 years, maybe even 10. If this is a short term strategy, it’s doomed.

All I know is, when I was a young lad I picked up Justice League #5 and 6 (the Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire book) in a 7-Eleven in some dusty town in the southwestern United States, and that was one of the big reasons why I got so addicted to comic books.
