January 28, 2019 4:57 pm I agree with both of you on The Immortal Hulk. I am getting tired of Marvel writers feeling the need to add to backstories in order to convolute them so that they can put a stamp on the character like Tony being adopted with parents who were secret agents, the first arc of Venom by Donny Cates, and now this. I struggled with that first arc of Venom, but like the second arc a lot more. I would start with the most recent issue which is 10 where it’s a lot more interesting. The Knightmares arc of Batman is going all the way to issue 69 which is a long time for a dream. Donny Cates wrote both Thanos and Cosmic Ghost Rider. I still don’t buy that character as Frank Castle and it makes a lot more sense if he’s Deadpool.
December 9, 2018 4:56 pm I’m genuinely shocked that Batman #60 wasn’t discussed in depth. That’s just very strange to me especially with that cliffhanger and I felt it was a great issue with fantastic art.
November 19, 2018 8:13 pm That was Hicks at the end of the Alien 3 issue with being burned. You two are literally the only ones who brought up the eye colors in Mister Miracle #12 which I missed since it was so subtle. That blew my mind with tying it into the first issue and truly was impressive. This was the best analysis of the issue that I have read/heard.
November 4, 2018 3:58 pm I don’t like Heroes in Crisis since Tom King’s portrayal of Booster Gold has been horrible which started with the Batman arc among other things. Booster is not that stupid and inconsiderate where he was written so well in Injustice 2 by Tom Taylor. Harley getting the drop on the Trinity was insane too and just unbelievable. Then killing off Poison Ivy offscreen with her name being mentioned as a death is just terrible writing. We still don’t know which Green Lantern was killed from the first issue since you saw part of the body. The ring should have left the body to find someone else while recording what happened. It doesn’t make sense where that’s a huge rule that has been broken. I’m still surprised that you both didn’t criticize Action Comics #1004 from last week with Lois calling Clark “Baby” 5 times where he didn’t have her voice down. It was too much.
September 30, 2018 6:32 pm That’s fair since this was the first issue where something actually happened in Doomsday Clock and it’s been paced very poorly. I do agree with Fhiz from Gotham Spoilers where Doomsday Clock ultimately doesn’t mean much and won’t really have changes that mean anything. It has just taken way too long and a reveal like that was cool in the context of something interesting happening in the series, but probably doesn’t really matter. It seems like a lot of effort in order to get the JSA and Legion of Super Heroes back. It seems like no one cares about Doomsday Clock that much and it just feels so separate from everything that is goin on right now.
September 30, 2018 5:55 pm If these deaths actually stick, then that would be a huge mistake. Wally’s death would make me feel that Rebirth is pointless. There was also a dead Green Lantern where you see the symbol under Superman’s armpit which means the crime should have been recorded and the ring should have left the body. It’s either Kyle or Guy who is dead which would be a big deal too if Tom King didn’t think that through. I think Tom King writes Booster Gold incredibly poorly especially compared to Tom Taylor with Injustice 2 where that was Booster. The fact that Booster said it was awesome in the alternate reality when Hal killed himself was wrong. He would never say that and would have been disturbed right away by seeing that. The dynamic between Ted and Booster was fantastic where their deaths were heartfelt and impactful. I am genuinely surprised that both of you didn’t bring up the beginning of Doomsday Clock #7 with Doctor Manhattan killing Alan Scott which was one of the big changes. I didn’t believe that was Ramos since the style was so different, but it was a really good issue and I loved the trivia section. I think Chip Zdarsky would go overboard with jokes at times in his Spider-Man run, but his final issue with Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #310 (what a long title) was great. I don’t like Snyder’s Justice League run and feel that it is way too reliant on his concepts from Metal. The Batman Who Laughs being brought in makes it worse for me and I already like Justice League Dark and Justice League Odyssey more than the main Justice League comic. Darkseid worked in Odyssey, but I just wish that what happened in Mister Miracle actually happened with the right looks for those characters.
September 30, 2018 5:33 pm Grayson wasn’t like that at all. Most of his work tends to focus on those issues though.
September 23, 2018 7:23 pm In your New Gods discussion, you brought up that people shouldn’t try to emulate King and Gerads which is true. Marvel was actually going to do a sequel to King’s and Walta’s Vision comic. That would have been a huge mistake and it was recently cancelled. It’s unfortunate for the creators where they apparently did 4 issues of it and 2 years of work, but doing the sequel in the first place was a very bad idea since no one should other than King and Walta. I don’t understand why anyone would agree to the sequel. The solicit for the first issue said, “Will it match the magic of King’s run? Read on to find out!” It was changed later. I can honestly say that I’ve never seen a comic promoted that way and it bred little confidence in its quality.
September 23, 2018 6:30 pm You should at least know about Percy getting replaced unceremoniously and Lobdell taking over isn’t even being treated as a big deal by DC which shows that Nightwing isn’t being taken seriously by the company. That’s really concerning along with the new direction. The amount of new directions since the start of the New 52 for Dick with a new location, status quo, and supporting cast is ridiculous at this point. Higgins did The New Order recently and I would bring him back on Nightwing. His Nightwing run was undercut multiple times by crossovers and it would be nice to just see him get a real run that didn’t involve crossovers so much.
September 23, 2018 3:30 pm I was intrigued by the ending of Mister Miracle #11, but have had a very bad feeling that it would turn out to be some sort dream where the story itself doesn’t ultimately matter. It’s going to be about the journey and not the destination. The solicitation for 12 says you will find out what is actually going on which made me nervous when I saw that. I just want Scott to be happy with Barda and Jake. I agree with the idea that this should have been Darkseid’s death, but there’s no way that DC would allow that to happen without promoting it once it did happen. I’ve loved the series and hope it sticks the landing even though the ending of issue 11 gives me pause.
