August 23, 2013 9:56 am I think the difference here is that (as others have commented) we've seen Affleck in very similar roles before, to not-so-great results. Keaton & Ledger were complete about-faces, unexpected & doubted, but also untested.
August 22, 2013 11:43 am Really dug this issue. It's not light by any means, but it gets back to a sense of action – and after thinking about it for a while, this seems like the first time Conan & Belit have really been together, acting as a team & not lost in themselves separately (or physically), since Conan left Belit to chase his impostor halfway through the second arc (in Cimmeria). It's a good step in validating the previous arcs' woes, & there's a really nice mystery built into the story here. 5/5 for me.
August 20, 2013 11:53 am Yeah, I can see what you're saying — and the characterizations are spot on. I just hope it's played out as a ramping up of tension between them & not a sudden plot shift (like, "I have to go this way." "Well, I want to go this other way." "Okay, bye.") ... and I see the seeds of that dissent between them, but I'm curious what kind of catalyst we're going to get to push them from (what is set up as) one of the all-time great loves – to a definitive break-up. Just wondering out loud... I do like that they are so young, so that kind of extreme shift is more plausible.
August 20, 2013 8:54 am Yeah, I hope this arc breathes a little, both plot- & character-wise. I am curious though... This Conan + Belit run ends at issue #25, which I'm assuming stems from a huge rift between them (I haven't read the source books at all). That means 7 issues till we're done (basically 2 arcs). Not a lot of time to do that kind of about-face, right?
August 13, 2013 9:16 am So happy to have Scalera on a title I'm stoked about. Been following his work for a while online & at cons. It'll be nice to hold it in print. And that Remender guy... he's no slouch. Gonna have to shell out for that Robinson cover too. Man, this is everything I want in a comic (that isn't Prophet)!
July 18, 2013 3:52 pm Yeah, I really dug it too. Had almost an "Alien" vibe, with the cavernous structures taking up most of the issue's space. I think it was the crude coloring in places that lent to what @glea was talking about, w/ the "prelim" look. It did look a bit rushed, but it worked for me regardless. I am so impressed with these single-creator issues, in that the voice always sounds the same, regardless of the writer. 5/5 for me. (Maybe I need to pick up "Old City Blues" now...)
July 18, 2013 3:44 pm Man, I ended up really liking this arc. I'd put it maybe 3rd in the series for me (after the first two arcs). I didn't care much for #16, but #17 had a really cool plot device going for it, then I didn't really dig the first half of this issue, until Wood came back around & gave the arc a really great ending. This arc ended up feeling the most... literary?... of the series. I can absolutely see how others might feel polarly opposed to this. But I give it a 5/5 (though some of the artwork felt a bit off – in tone, not anatomy or composition).
July 18, 2013 2:04 pm Finally got to read this. Agreed. 6GG's "voice" is so damn good.
July 18, 2013 11:38 am Wow, that Heartbreakers is sick. May have to buy this or track down the DHP issues...
July 18, 2013 9:40 am This seemed to really fly under the radar & not have very good promotion. My guess is, a lot of people are unsure how it fits with Battling Boy or something. Like, will it be in the OGN or a later HC or something... How was the story?
