June 19, 2013 12:52 pm So pleased to have the spotlight on Damage; I remember him fondly, as this was the only series I ever got a letter printed in! Grant had nearly everything a 90's superhero needed; a cool jacket, terrible hair and a nice line in grimacing through gritted teeth. He only lacked for the leg-pouches. I seem to recall the story of figuring out Grant's true parentage dragging out for a verrry long time; wasn't Dr Polaris mentioned as another possible father at some point? His rather angsty nature & short fuse might've been explained by the later revelation that he was abused by his foster father. Am I right in thinking that this book started off as one of the first (possibly only) creator-owned characters within the DCU proper?
May 16, 2013 5:56 am It's been out a while in the UK - we saw it last weekend. It's a fine summer blockbuster, plenty of good effects and action. The digitally superimposed lens flare that irritated me last time is still present, but not as obvious. I left feeling a bit cross that the fanboy pleasing in-jokes were so badly placed. There's a powerfully emotional beat towards the end of the film that was spoilt for me by heavy-handed placement of well known quotes from old Trek movies. For the first time that I can remember it felt like being a fan of the franchise was actually detrimental to my enjoyment of the movie, rather than enhancing it.
May 14, 2013 12:05 pm I'll miss Demon Knights - it started as one of my favourites of the New 52. Paul Cornell clearly had a grand vision for this book in tandem with Stormwatch and it's a damn shame we'll never know how that could've panned out. Venditti has done a fine job on his run too, but I can't help but feel that this book - already something of a tough sell as it's not out-and-out super heroics - has been doomed for some time.
May 6, 2013 3:48 pm In 2009 - after Dwayne McDuffie went public about the kind of editorial intrusion he'd endured into his JLA plots - Dan Didio visited the Comic Con in Bristol UK. I asked DC's then-Editor what role he thought the Justice League should have in the DC universe; should that flagship book be tied to every cross-over and reflect the various changes in the individual character's comics, or should creators be permitted to write completely standalone stories. He accepted the question gracefully but didn't really have an answer, and ultimately side-stepped it by asking the panel audience for a show of hands to indicate what they thought. I suppose asking comic creators about their thinking behind a book, or the ethos in which they envisage a character (or group of characters) might be more revealing than asking about plot lines they are not at liberty to disclose.
May 2, 2013 4:34 am What a great article; delightfully written and heartwarming to see how these momentous events in comic book history are commemorated. Thank you for sharing your experience!
April 16, 2013 1:40 am I did not know this existed. I was a fan of the short lived Peter Cannon series at DC in the early 1990s.
April 11, 2013 11:44 am The end of this series marks the first time since 1994 when I haven't had a single Vertigo book on my pull list.
April 7, 2013 2:18 pm Perhaps a useful follow-up article could be "Cyborg: Why would I start?"
March 12, 2013 1:59 am Glad you liked it. I remember this "Tenth Circle" storyline as a bit of a disappointment.
March 4, 2013 1:35 pm Does anyone know if Batman's name is missing from the roll-call for a reason, or was it just a mistake?
