February 20, 2013 9:38 am I've been to the Trek convention Creation puts on in Nashville. It's a small con to be sure, but one I'm very fortunate to have in my backyard. After reading this article, I'm pretty sure all questions fielded to the cast are the same no matter what city you happen to be in. Everyone is so hopeful it's not the end for the characters they love and perhaps even moreso --the actors themselves because I'll be damned if these aren't some of the nicest people I've met. But like WheelHands, I'm perfectly fine with TNG being frozen in time. I love it for what it was. I don't need a reimagining or a new movie. What I do want, however, is a new Star Trek television show. I'm so tired of everything getting "rebooted" or "reimagined." Yes we have the technology now to make old things look shiny and new again, but I want to see them use all of that for a new, fresh, original Star Trek story. Surely we haven't run out of ideas yet.
December 13, 2012 6:30 pm If you already have presents for your family but want to add a comic book touch to your gifts, might I suggest making comic book gift bows? I made a bunch for my presents this year and they're really simple. http://jamiebrock.hubpages.com/hub/Handmade-Gift-Bows-Tutorial This isn't the exact one I used, but it seems to be the same thing.
November 15, 2012 9:40 am The last paragraph of this article is incredible. I mean, I enjoyed the entire article...but that last paragraph made me lift up a fist of solidarity. Which was subsequently followed by strange looks from my co-workers.
November 12, 2012 9:44 am I didn't breathe in diet coke, but I did laugh so loudly at work that pretty much everyone at the office looked over at me with a puzzled "WTF?" face. Ooops. Costume was brilliant!
November 12, 2012 9:42 am Princess Batman is so freaking wonderful!! And those Court of Owls masks are so amazing! Very chilling.
October 29, 2012 9:23 am ORKO!! Yes!! Sketches this week are amazing. Love Batman and the Doctor and Orko the most. :)
October 23, 2012 10:25 am @itsbecca - I agree with you completely. As we've established, not every male is this way (I'd even venture out and say most men in this specific group aren't), but as a woman who's not exactly skinny, I've encountered a lot of that same mentality in the geek world. But really, if you're female and don't fit into society's definition of what's beautiful, you can expect the "you only matter if you're attractive" mentality everywhere you go.
October 19, 2012 11:01 am I agree that our society needs better feminist icons. It's a really strange time to be a woman. On the one hand, I'm living in a world where I have so much more than the women who came before me. It's socially acceptable for me to have a job, a college education, to be in my 30's and without children, etc. etc. I am no longer judged solely on my abilities to have children and run the home while my man is working to provide the funds. On the other hand, I'm still living in a world where a lot of people/corporations/politicians still do not understand how to treat and respect women. It's a strange dichotomy to be sure. But I don't think that the issue here is necessarily about feminism or sexism. It's really more about our society's preoccupation with appearances and their standard of beauty. Don't get me wrong, I could go on and on and on about slutty Halloween costumes and the way women are portrayed. But as I scrolled through and read all the captions about the ridiculousness of fake muscles and it struck me that men, too, have hoops to jump through. The real issue here is that advertising, media, and corporations all want you to hate yourself so you buy their products to make you better. From fake muscles to (quite literally) titilating Halloween wear to Rogaine, to beauty products, to plastic surgery. There are a lot of people profitting from making people feel like they aren't okay. According to these people, women need to wear revealing clothes and men need to wear fake muscles.
May 22, 2012 12:15 pm I do understand how digital comics work. Just trying to explain why I prefer hard copies of things when they're available. :)
May 22, 2012 11:49 am I work in royalties for a large music publisher, and I can assure you that royalties for recording artists truly are abysmal. Even royalties for more famous catalogs such as The Beatles and Lady Gaga are surprisingly low. What's worse, is that they get even less for digital media. I can assume it's the same for comics and digital books as well. So being that creators, writers and artists get so little income from sales, it's important to have both. As for me, I'm on a middle ground. I get the majority of my comics from the store, but I'm certainly interested in adding more digital comics to my life. However, I don't have an iPad, E-Reader, or even a computer right now. I can get comics on my phone, but even the Droid Razr's screen is too small for my liking. I do have a certain amount of reluctance when it comes to digital media because I just had to deal with a hard drive crash and I lost a LOT of music, pictures, movies, etc. There's a certain amount of comfort in knowing that no matter what happens, from hard drive crashes to the zombie apocalypse, that I can go and pull comics out of the box and read them. But maybe I'm just showing my age... ;)
