Batgirl was no doubt one of the most controversial characters in this opening act of the DC New 52 (followed…

September 9, 2011 12:15 am @paul @wally Yeah I guess that goes towards my first bit. I mean, I get what they're trying to do to Superman. I get that they're intentionally painting him this way. I just don't quite like it though. I mean, just because I understand Superman is an immature hero (while Clark Kent though, seems to be the very image of idyllic Kansas farm boy), doesn't mean I necessarily like it. So maybe I got the right vibe, but am just not digging it. I'm willing to keep tabs on this and check in every now and then. I'll definitely check up on the Superman comic. But I just don't know if I like this characterization. @kennyg I think I'll give it a re-read, I mean, I have it right here so I might as well. And I'll let it mull over. But first impressions are quite lasting and I don't quite enjoy the BOY SuperMAN is being right now. We'll see how older Clark Kent fairs on the 28th.
September 8, 2011 7:00 pm So....I know that I'm in the minority but I didn't really like it? Or maybe, rather, I didn't like Superman's character? Well, let me list my reasons why and you tell me if I got the wrong vibe or if I got the right vibe but am just not having it. 1) He's cocky. Okay, I know that he's SUPPOSED to be cocky and arrogant but he was getting a bit too much as Superman. 2) He's reckless. He's supposed to be for the people yet he doesn't really care that all his fighting, dodging, escaping is causing harm to the city around him? I think I've had this problem with Superman for a long time but it was really apparent here. All the while bullets were flying and bounced off him as he ran away, all I could think about were the ricochet's hitting the civilians all around him. Also, that train sequence in which undoubtedly TONS of people should die because the freaking train derailed off of the elevated support and onto the ground at HIGH speed? I know that there was a bomb on it but seriously. All I could think of was the opening scene of the Incredibles. 3) He's completely "Might Makes Right." How is he any better than the "rats" he takes care of? They use fear to intimidate others into doing what they want, he uses his super strength to do the exact same thing. He talks about laws yet he flaunts the legal system by intimidating and coercing a criminal into "confessing". Hell, if I were being tortured by Superman I might say anything he wanted me to in order to make it stop. I just can't stand any of those reasons. Please tell me how those are likable qualities? I did like, however, enjoy the humbling of Clark Kent. I did enjoy how the status quo of Lois + Jimmy + Clark = best of friends, isn't there. I enjoy how his costume is totally in the basics. I enjoy how his power set isn't OP right now and how he bleeds and bruises. I mean, these little things I definitely enjoyed... It's just his GD characterization I can't stand right now.
September 8, 2011 6:26 pm Ugh, those paragraph breaks I had in notepad did NOT go through. Man, if only there were an edit button.
September 8, 2011 5:52 pm I always enjoy seeing your design perspective on these graphic arts.
September 8, 2011 5:49 pm Everyone's saying that Alfred is a hologram. I don't think so. The way I read it was that there was a final barrier that was hidden but Batman couldn't see past and at that point, Alfred dropped the hologram, revealing the rest of the batcave. See how the background in the panel where Alfred appears is different from the one above it? I don't think that they would change Alfred *that* much like Jarvis in the Iron Man movies.
September 1, 2011 12:24 pm I'm so in I think I've drowned in it. I think I'll replay Arkham Asylum soon in preparation.
August 31, 2011 1:37 pm "and a bang loud enough to eaten (temporarily)" I assume you mean deafen? Darn that auto-correct? Anyways - great article. I always enjoy applying real world science to comic book scenarios. I can understand your "my home is my castle, I must defend it" take on why the moon and Himalayan's are a bad place for Mr. Bolt, but perhaps he didn't want many others to be affected should be he ever let a burp astray?
August 19, 2011 11:13 am That Zatanna cover is amazing. Adam Hughes never disappoints. I love the subtlety and the sexiness of it. And plus, as your eye takes in the cover, the eye line is drawn up her cane and at her...um...pants. ... I will so incredibly miss her costume. I love the energy and the playfulness of it. Her new one just seems "hip" and "angsty".
August 18, 2011 2:43 pm Late to the scene, I picked up DMZ at the behest of iFanboy and man, was I floored. That book blew my mind away and I've been devouring as much DMZ as I could. Then I went to Big Apple Con and to my surprise found that BW had a table there. I got to chat with the guy and he showed me the Northlanders trade and also Demo. I was immediately convinced to get Northlanders and but I admit I was skeptical about Demo. Then I read Demo and that magic combination of BW's writing and Becky Cloonan's art just left me speechless after reading it. It was one of the few trades I've had to read over a few days because each story was just so...deep. So overwhelming in the characterizations and the environment. I had to take days to digest each story mentally. Brian Wood's influence and ability are amazing and I too can't wait to see him post-Vertigo.
August 16, 2011 4:55 pm My first comic book that I remember was when my parents took me to Sam's Club and for some reason decided to buy me a large bundle of comic books. That's right, they sold the collected issues of Zero Hour at Sam's Club (that tells you when I first started, huh?) I'm not exactly sure what went through my immigrant Asian parents' minds when they decided to buy their normally academic focused son comic books but there you go. I remember reading the crisis-filled issues being SO confused why were the numbers going backwards towards Zero while the storyline progressed. I remember wondering why did this purple guy (Major Force) stuff a girl into a fridge, who was this menacing green cape clad ghost character (Spectre), and who was this punk-looking kid claiming to be Superboy. I also remember sometime early getting an issue of Fantastic Four #1 (it wasn't the first volume...) and I had thought that it WAS the first issue of Fantastic Four and that one day it would be worth thousands. I totally read that to pieces - probably water damaged beyond recognition. I have no idea where all those comics are now though - my mom probably threw them away and my comic book love lapsed until I rekindled it with the Timmverse and iFanboy.
