August 3, 2012 11:21 am does anyone else make a little game of these by scrolling down the images, avoiding the signatures and credits to try and guess who the artists is on the style alone? the only one i guessed this time was sean murphy
July 16, 2012 1:18 pm Qhile this is an amazing achievement, it's a bit misleading. 383,612 was across 8 regular covers (even more if you count the high priced chromium and all the retailer incentives) dividing that by 8 is an average of about 48,000 a cover. Walking Dead usually sells just north of 50,000 copies a month. While I doubt fans will buy all of them, many will, and many will buy a few. I don't read Walking Dead and I almost bought the Quitely one and the chromium one (if it wasnt &9.99 i would have) though the Darkness issue it beat had multiple covers, and really every big book has several incentive covers. This figure is also first printing initial orders, not multiple printings, which shows there was strong retailer support up front more so than consumer support. Justice League apparently sold over 400,000 copies (unknown how much of that was digital) and the Obama Spider-man sold in excess of 500,000 copies. its still an amazing achievement. imagine how much the reboot of Walking Dead that features a younger (perhaps unmarried?) Rick vs the Obamazombie (Zombama?) will sell...
July 16, 2012 9:58 am or perhaps at time Kirkman wasnt an Image partner or an evangelist for creator owned work. Back then he was just about making comics (for Image AND Marvel), now he is about spreading the word!
July 6, 2012 9:17 pm i guess that means that Roger Ebert and 72% of movie reviewers are idiots and Marvel Zombies that don't know a bad movie when they see one. Im so glad we have you two to point out how dumb we idiots are. Was this gift of insight from years of training and study or just a god given gift?
July 3, 2012 12:05 pm I loved this movie, by far the best spider-man movie. its not going to thrill a lot of people especially those who want a superhero movie to be an action movie. while there is action it's the characters that are the heart of this movie. There are certainly some plot problems and conveniences but there are in virtually every superhero movie, including avengers and dark knight. If that's the kind of thing you focus on you will have problems with this movie, but spider-man is about heart and this movies heart is in the right place. in many ways i liked it more than avengers. the avengers movie, was better constructed, better executed, faster, bigger and more fun, in the end it ,like the comic, is about superheroes (who really have nothing in common with me or most people) saving the world. this movie, like the comic, is at its best when its about heart, and loss and responsibility and not giving up even when you should, even when the price is too high. They got that right, even moreso than raimi's version, and with that right i really dont care about the little details.
June 26, 2012 10:32 am There is a signed limited edition of this available at SDCC. you can order on the IDW site and pick it up there. I have all of these. they are all awesome and i cant wait for this. While the art on all is amazing, this is probably the best story of all of them. i already have this in single issues, in the original trade, in the frank miller daredevil omnibus and now this. One of my favorites of all time. as an aside there is a walt simonson Alien book coming from Titan books not idw: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1781161305/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER while its probably not the same level of production, the premise is the same (all shot from original art) but its a bit cheaper and not as many pages as the idw ones
June 25, 2012 11:38 am As far as the Kennedy thing, @theWillingwell is correct, Blake is only shown as the assassin in the movie. in the comics it's implied but never shown, Blake jokingly implies it (now the don't ask me what i was doing line is funnier, because the real reason was he was crying like a baby with his arch nemesis) and Veidt says he was in Dallas but again we don't ever see that. Not even a flashback panel, despite lots of flashback panels in that scene. it's only in dialogue and Veidt could easily be mistaken, especially if Blake wants people to think he was involved. There's a line at the beginning where Blake tackles JFK hard and says something to the effect of killing a president is a hell of a thing to have on your resume, i wouldnt be surprised to find Blake TRYING to get people to think he did that. Especially once he really understands what has happened and why, and how it affects his world. I think this series is really going to show we dont know Blake like we thought (i think thats going to be a lot of Before Watchmen) Blake wasnt much of a character in the original, more a plot device, we never got his "origin" we just saw him in other flashbacks, and how those experiences painted the picture of Blake. I never bought the scene where Blake cries to Moloch in the original. The whole "you are the closest thing to a friend" was just a convenient way to get Moloch wrapped up in the story which gets him killed which sets up Rorshack etc. Now it make more sense since they shared that moment the first time the Comedian's world turned upside down. Camelot and his friend ( and i do think there was gay subtext. not that they ever had sex, but that there were perhaps feelings that manly men, men who were soldiers and heroes wouldnt really accept at that time. Feelings that would be buried by some with excessive philandering and others with violence especially sexual assault) were gone and Blake may come to see the world is shaped by bigger forces than he realized. this would also help the Moloch scene . I also never really bought why the Comedian didnt just tell Nixon and Nixon could have just launced an air strike against the island. The "it's too big" seemed like a weak excuse for a tough talking man of action. The Blake we see in the 40's is a thug, but still views himself as a hero, still fights the good fight even if its because he just like beating people up. Something happens to change him into the nihilist we see in Vietnam and the Captain Metropolis meeting, and i think this series may be about that. By repeating a pattern of large conspiracies that upend his world The Comedian just giving up works better. While i dont think Moore had any of this in mind, i think it expands the character in a great way. Stan and Jack didnt have Reed Richards create a Fantasic Four with public identities and fame as a way to give his friends better lives because he felt guilty for taking their normal lives away due to his error, that addition came later on by another writer who saw the characters in a different light and it makes sense of something that may not have made sense before. Or Im overthinking this.
June 25, 2012 10:45 am NOBODY expects full-on penetration! It's chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... it's two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency....
June 18, 2012 10:43 am I dont see why anyone would think morrison wouldnt accept the award. he is certainly not some anti authoritarian punk, he writes almost exclusively for a huge media corporation, morrisoncon is being held at a hard rock hotel in vegas, he has reportedly consulted with big corporations in using sigil magick in their branding, he has embraced hollywood and celebrity. he knows that the best way to reach people is to use the roads that get to the most people (remember the line from the invisibles that he repurposed from the sex pistols "i use the en-e-my"). Even if he may not care for the queen, her policies or even the monarchy in general (i really dont know his stand, and the queens portrayal in some of his work may not indicate either, monarchs and heads of state are great fodder for mocking in any entertainment form) this is still an honor, a recognition of his contributions. No one gives 2 fucks about the academy of motion picture arts and sciences, they reflect neither the popular opinion nor the critical one, but rather a small group of aging insiders, has beens and never weres, and yet everyone wants to win an oscar. because its a great honor. and if you think the queen wouldnt dig his work, you havent seen this: http://zipmeme.com/meme/112850/ shes not the goddamn batman, shes the motherfuckin queen!
