October 2, 2011 6:00 pm There have been a handful of those on Newsarama and CBR. I've found them pretty interesting reads, though they usually go in completely different directions than what even comic fans saying we should go for new readers would ask for. For instance, in a large number of "new reader" responses I've read, a lot of them have given thumbs up to Green Arrow and Justice League International, two books that have been given anything from a "meh" rating to being down right attacked by longtime fans. The truth is, we as comic book fans just don't think the same as someone who would be a COMPLETELY new reader. We don't know what they want. We're making guesses.
October 1, 2011 2:40 pm I agree, but I don't think they WANTED this to happen. It's possible George couldn't handle the workload, or he had a problem with Dan's direction, or something like that. Either way, it's not something they planned on, I don't believe.
October 1, 2011 2:38 pm Kelly Sue DeConnick went on record before the relaunch even happened to say that she was largely too swamped to take on an ongoing. That said, I agree that DC needs to find more new writers. Marvel too, come to that. Bendis can't write everything.
September 30, 2011 9:43 pm Interesting article. I think it's borne out of some misguided preconceived notions, though. Getting people that are already reading comics in some other area? What's that, another 30,000 readers maybe? There's no way they threw away the amount of money they threw away just for that. They were definitely looking for new readers, though whether or not they got enough to justify the expense remains to be seen. As far as making genre material...the more I hear about things like that, the more I realize comics are screwed. If all they have to offer are things that people can already get, but with voice acting, movement and music...why spend $3 a month? I do feel they should've had more all ages books to offer, though. What's out now appeals more to children just learning to read rather than 9-12 year olds. We could do with more comics that have "Adventure" in the title, so to speak. At any rate, I'm more interested in comics now than I was before all this, but as young as I am (early 20's), I'm not DC's target audience. I've been reading them since I was eight. And unfortunately I can't exactly get any friends into comic books since there isn't a store to be found for miles and miles. If DC REALLY wants new readers, besides potential digital sales, what's necessary is to get comics back into Wal-Mart, and supermarkets. My uncle's been reading since like 1970, but with no comic shop in town and no comics in Wal-Mart or Kroger, there's really no way for him to actively give DC or Marvel the money he would have no problem paying them. And he's not the only person I know like that. Kinda sad, really.
September 30, 2011 9:30 pm I liked Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, but I gotta be honest. It's no better than Justice League #1. Because I don't make a habit of picking at something's flaws, it's not a big deal, but I did find it rather weird that I got to the end of that issue and he wasn't webslinging. Felt like I was missing half the book.
September 23, 2011 10:33 pm He actually wrote in twice to Superboy--and talked about the same idea twice. Ironically, while I love GJ's work this is probably my least favorite idea of his. This WAS a fun issue, for those curious. Dealt with Superboy and Knockout's whole relationship.
September 15, 2011 3:57 pm Great list. I really would've suggested the entire Grant Morrison Justice League run, but narrowing it to one trade makes financial sense. I wouldn't argue with a single entry on this list, save to say I'd add JLA: One Million just for the pure fun it gave to the DCU for the month it existed.
September 8, 2011 7:20 pm What I can't understand is how so many fans constantly say, "I bet DC/Marvel won't even publish this!" when in just about every comic that has a letter column, they almost always publish at least one angry letter. They aren't afraid of your opinion guys. Guess what? You already paid for the book. Anyway, this actually made my day. Thanks Mr. Flanagan.
September 8, 2011 7:13 pm ....Are you trolling? I mean, this book couldn't BE any more for new readers. There's no decades of continuity to explore here, dude. There are only three old concepts in the entire book (or for that matter, to tie this book to the DC Universe): O.M.A.C., Project Cadmus, and Brother Eye. It's right there in the book who Brother Eye is--a satellite created by Cadmus that was eventually rejected and forgotten about. I doubt there's another DC comic on the stands right now that's for new readers more than this.
