June 7, 2012 1:33 pm I really did not make up my mind before I bought this issue. The art alone was worth the price of admission. As far as adopted superhero comics... they never end. Watchmen did end, and with a big bad beautiful ending as is usually expected from an Alan Moore story. First time I read Watchmen I did not like the ending and thought !That's It!?! But Watchmen can be re-read and all you need is there if you look and re-examine it years later. I bought this because I wanted to see these retro characters in action by the best of the best in the business. I love the era + Darwyn Cooke, so I bought it. Having said that, Darwyn Cooke did do a good job in bringing these characters back. I am just saying they didn't need to be brought back by DC comics.
June 1, 2012 4:03 pm The problem is not DC/Marvel or whoever else you want to blame. The problem is you humble readers. You get so attached to these fictional characters and follow them whether they are being well written or not, whether there is the kind of diversity and struggle that exists in the real world or there is this whitewashed world of beautiful people always winning. All the while you waste your time and money on the same old stories. There is great original stuff out there but you won't take a chance. Naturally the market is going to take cues from their audience. Why has this become a spectacle? well because you "guys" can't keep your opinions to yourself even when you claim to not care. "This is lame and I don't care but let me write a reactionary comment." The reboot made things more confusing for me honestly because so much has not really changed while other things have changed or been deleted. I thought there would be greater changes and more diversity. I thought DC was telling their readers we are doing something new here and if you don't like it there is more fish in the sea. But they are not doing anything new besides giving Swamp Thing and Animal Man the kind of creators they deserve. Still, where are the black people at? and Latinos? or mixed race people? Or where is the comic that could appeal to girl tweens? or that deals with veteran suffering from ptsd? Believe it or not all the above read comics and there are only a few of us because we put up with the bull shit while others don't. Oh yeah they are not strong enough to hold their own books? because that kind of stuff can only happen in independent comics? where creators don't pander to established readers! In the spirit of the reboot making a character gay does not seem like a big deal but it is. Gay people read comics and they want to see gay characters. To just make him gay and it not be a big deal is kind of simplifying the issue. Your sexuality does not change your heroic character? Uhh HELL YEAH it does, it makes you more heroic unless you grew up in some kind of idealistic family that accepts you for who you are because unfortunately that is not the usual case! If they don't address the issue of coming out, of how much it hurts to know that having a kid with the person you love is going to be a long and complicated process, and all the other facets of being gay in a world that is not ready to understand you then it just means Alan Scott has a cute (asain?) boyfriend, and that is a shame. This can be a move in the right direction but I doubt it. Why? because since Greg Rucka left Batwoman, nothing at DC or Marvel has made me say: Finally! And Josh, Stephanie Brown was doing great on her solo book, who cares if the sales were not great. I believe it was cancelled to make way for Barbara Gordon as Batgirl not because it could not hold its own.
April 11, 2012 12:14 am I think Superman is a great character because we want to believe that someone who is raised with love and goodness turns out good no matter how strange and alone their awesome powers make them feel. And he is totally relevant. I sometimes feel that people just hate on you when you are more than mediocre. They are like, who do you think you are trying so hard and doing your best? It sounds weird but it's true. Yet there are also supportive people who can be proud of you even if they don't know you that well or are your competition. I also love Superman as a parent, since who does't want to be like Ma and Pa Kent. They are the best! I need to believe that my parenting will pay off when I am gone, that my kid will make mistakes but will be able to handle them with or without me. Superman is his upbringing and that is beautiful. Having said that I think DC needs to read this and listen to the fans when they say they want something new but without sacrificing the essence of a character. I think it would be a good idea to have one of the superman books be all ages. Do something for the kids that the parents can enjoy too, perhaps Clark Kent sent on assignments around the world where moral dilemmas arise. Something that old fanboys can't complain about because its for kids after all. Finally for those who think his life is too perfect: Imagine you can stop bad things from happening but you cannot be everywhere at once and therefore bad things still happen to those you love, no you have never experienced that? Or that out of all the people you know and love you will be the last to die so there will be many painful funerals. Yes Superman shares the same enemy with us all, time.
March 1, 2012 1:57 pm I think you meant Buddy Holly but wrote Billie Holliday.
January 2, 2012 3:09 pm This is not easy. Knowing that I have not read enough comics to justify a real answer, I am still confident that Northlanders #41 Thor's Daughter was THE BEST– mainly because it tells a full story in one issue. The art fit the story so well. The story of what daughters can inherit from their fathers is not done enough in comics. That moment when a character realizes " I am my father's daughter, and you cannot take that from me" was powerful and violently beautiful. It was an awesome year for comics, and I have missed out on most of it because of school and Money. Ellis, Kirkman, Lemire, effin Snyder, Hickman, T. Moore, Weibe, Menton, M-Waid, Azzarello, Rucka , Gillen, Spencer, BQ Miller, Hann, Brubaker, Aaron, Morrison, Cosby/McCool, and my favorite baldy, Bendis, won't let me walk away from this insane world we love.
