June 29, 2015 10:18 am Welcome back, Ron! Connor, most of the various Robins/Batman extended Gotham stuff is clearly not your bag, but just to keep you abreast of the new status quo (for better or worse): - Damian is alive again, the superpowers were temporary and a result of whatever New Gods thing brought him back to life, he practically exists in an out-of-continuity state at the moment outside of an appearance in Gotham Academy (Snyder won't even write him, supposedly because he's too close to his son's age) - Current Tim Drake is still on the Teen Titans, I believe - Batman Beyond Tim Drake is the Tim Drake from that wretched Futures End series, so he's a Tim Drake from a possible future flung forward into an even further possible future because Terry McGinnis came back to the earlier possible future time period and died (Deep breath, eye roll) - Jason Todd is Bro, bro. - Dick Grayson, SuperSpy is the best of these, and looking to be reintegrated into Gotham here in the next few months. This has been Too Many Robins.
June 1, 2015 11:49 am Well done solo appearance, Josh. Always appreciate the podcast Monday mornings.
February 23, 2015 10:37 am I love Lazarus, and am a proselytizer for it everywhere I can manage. If it gets canceled, I will join Josh on his Rampage of Joshes for Lazarus.
October 27, 2014 12:03 pm As a giant history nerd, I always have a very quick answer to my favorite one-and-done single issue comic: Sandman #31, Three Septembers and a January, which tells the story of Emperor Norton. Also, yes, Lazarus must go on until Rucka and Lark are good and done and not before.
July 7, 2014 12:49 pm Of those, I would say these are the "essential" Marvel events to understand modern continuity: House of M Civil War Fear Itself (only if you care about Thor-related stuff) X-Men Schism Avengers vs. X-men Infinity Original Sin Josh is absolutely right that Marvel generally allows great jumping on points in many of their books with their new Marvel Now season-type runs. Much more than DC, Marvel also has those lovely recap pages that DC lacks (and shame on them for that). Josh's recommendations for great stuff is super solid (Ultimate Spider-man, Daredevil by Bendis or Waid, Annihilation cosmic crossover, Thor, etc.) I felt Age of Ultron was largely unnecessary and tangential. Secret Invasion is meh, but I really enjoyed all of the Dark Reign stuff and Siege stuff that followed. With all of this, mileage may -- of course -- vary.
April 14, 2014 4:47 pm Huh... this seems to be a week of "mileage may vary" for me. I loved Batman Eternal for example, and it seemed you guys were fairly confused about when, why, and what was happening there. It's not happening in the future, but rather in the aftermath of Forever Evil. And dickish Major Forbes --the only evident corrupt example from the issue among four other police featured (Gordon, Bullock, Sawyer, Bard) -- has been a part of the New 52 since the beginning (albeit from the awful TDK series), and it's been shown in both The Dark Knight and Detective Comics that the GCPD has not quite purged itself of corrupt officials under Gordon's reign. In a matter of opinion, I've quite enjoyed Fabok, and indeed prefer him to Finch, who struggles much more with facial expressions, I feel. Some of this was just confusion, the rest is of course merely a matter of opinion. I also think, given that it's a weekly comic, putting Scott Snyder at the helm, the guy with the single-most best-selling comic on the stands right now, was an attempt to legitimize DC's new weekly comic strategy. While I agree that the whole "Gotham's being destroyed" thing was a bit repetitive to the concluding Zero Year storyline, I trust that the story can earn that moment after 50+ issues. They've also said the comic is a "celebration of the character's mythos" and will include all sorts of stories, so I hope you all keep checking in and do find something you like (the swashbuckling mentioned, for example) further down the line. As for All-New X-men... I felt it was rather odd. While I loved the webcomic-like shorts in the middle, I felt the issue as a whole was... well... weird. It didn't really hold together for me, though it did seem to set up Beast as a primary suspect for the next big Marvel Event. Surprised not to see you guys talk about Nightcrawler #1 and the return of Chris Claremont (and one of his creations -- Amanda -- who I had to look up to understand). But I enjoyed the talk of what was covered, and always appreciate the work-time background conversation you guys treat me to on Monday afternoons.
August 5, 2013 11:37 am The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is infinitely better than its older brethren. While it's still not quite as large as the iPad, I have no trouble reading double page spreads. The only bugs I've seen are from Comixology's app, which will occasionally run slow and for a brief time had a great deal of trouble loading certain pure digital comics (also DC comics were not available through the app, but had to be purchased at the website and then downloaded, a frustrated runaround) - but the lion's share of those problems with the app has been fixed. The hardware has been great. For my money, if you have a Mac and operate with a lot of Apple products, it's worth your while to go with the hyper-expensive but heavily supported iPad. For example, my father has a Mac and an iPhone, so the family got him an iPad for Christmas. I have no Mac stuff outside an old iPod Touch (I know, what a Philistine), I use an Amazon Prime account, and I work a low-paying government job... so the cheaper Kindle Fire HD was perfect for me frankly. Different strokes and all.
July 15, 2013 11:20 am This is going to sound bad, but the part of the show I love most is always the end - hear me out! - because that's when everything generally gets horribly loopy and ridiculous, which is always a plus for me. Thanks for another fun show, and I totally agree on the overhyped Comixology paranoia.
May 23, 2013 9:29 am Sad the pick was not Green Lantern #20, as I felt it was a very strong, bold closing chapter of Johns' lengthy saga. Don't have this week's Daredevil yet (my store tends to under-order Marvel of all things, especially the less Avengers-y stuff), but it's been incredibly solid week in and week out, so I'm not surprised it's amazing again this week. Looking forward to reading it.
May 14, 2013 10:43 am Agreed. I had no idea its numbers were so small. I'm very sad that it's going now.
