IthoSapien

Name: Josh

Bio: I go by IthoSapien, or Itho for short. I've been collecting comics since I was 13 and I've been at it ever since with a few brief periods of stopping. Recently, I've committed myself to buying mostly DC with some IDW, Dark Horse, and Image thrown in for variety. I'm a big Sci-Fi guy, but I love comedy and adventure stuff too. I like to mix things up every now and then. My all-time favorite series is Hellboy. My favorite character right now is the Flash. That stuff may change in a few years. In short: I love comics, and I like to have fun. I'm also an aspiring comics writer/artist. Hopefully soon I'll have some stuff to show if anyone's interested.

August 30, 2013 9:00 pm I'm not into the whole narrated comics thing. I'm just not. Maybe for a laugh I'll check Kevin Smith reading Swamp Thing but I don't it's something I could take seriously. I still haven't "read" an audio book yet, but I have a few ideas; "The Bro Code" and "The Playbook" by Barney Stinson, "How to Archer", stuff like that. When I read comics though, I always have the voices in my head. To me, Hellboy will ALWAYS sound like Ron Pearlman, Spider-Man like the voice actor from the 90s TAS, you get the idea. Funny thing is, some voices I just made up. I already know how John Constantine sounds even though I've never heard anyone play as him before (that's technically faithful at least). Barry Allen's another; I know his voice but it's not like anyone that's portrayed him. I just read certain characters and invent voices for them. Deadpool's sounds really reedy and semi-high pitched, and that's almost every story. I think without the voices the reading would be less fun. It would certainly make the crazier characters less interesting I think. Maybe this is something DC will try with their online stuff, DC Multiverse it's called? If it brings in new readers, then I'd support it. I tell you want though, that pic in the middle of the article makes me want to see a motion comic adaptation of "The Killing Joke". With Mark Hamill and a few others doing the voices...
August 30, 2013 8:44 pm Ooh, what were those Tom vs the Flash episodes like? Classic Barry Allen tales read aloud?
August 30, 2013 4:47 pm Wow, I'm surprised the book got a 3. I think Johns is trying to ramp up attention on his books tho, since he's writing JL and Marvel is getting all this attention. Or he's overworked, IDK. That said, this was fun. I look forward to another "Read Along with Ghostmann!”.
August 30, 2013 4:42 pm @Cosmo, no I haven't. Something turned me off about Joe Casey's writing but I can't recall what it was. Maybe it was the first few pages of this, I'm not sure. I have no problem with a book like Sex, I was just joking with @TonyyyG about the book because I was bored that day. If you're enjoying it, rock on.
August 30, 2013 4:35 pm @Phess1, yeah that right there is what I'm talking about. "MC:TUS" said Shooter was the one who wanted the rebooted Universe and all this stuff. Harris is mentioned for any of that, so why is he blamed/credited with it? Do people just like Jim Shooter (I have no animosity towards him, but he sounds like a jerk) or am I wrong and Harris deserves his reputation? I don't know about Morrison and GL. If he hasn't touched it yet I can only guess its because he doesn't want to. I think he likes the reality altering/Multiverse shattering stories. Space is too small for him, I guess. But if he did write GL, I can only imagine the reception would be mixed. I like parts of his Batman run, and the ideas used; but I haven't finished it and feel little reason to. His Action Comics I found disappointing (I only read Vol.1). But if I'm the .00001% that feels that way then sure, let Morrison do GL. I agree with you about Snyder and Lemire with Vertigo, they have put in their time there. I only read 2 issues of Unchained, but based on what I'm seeing on the forums people are pretty unimpressed by it. If it sells it sells but I can't say its deserved right now. Venditti is great. Read the Surrogates, it is a million times better than the movie and was a big selling point on picking up GL with Venditti. He's only 2 issues into GL I think, starting at 21(?). Its good though. I remember both of them being pretty good at reverbing what happened in the last issue, but then I was reading those too so I'm not sure. It shouldn't be hard to pick up 21 and 22 though to catch up. I recommend picking up GL Corps too (which Venditti is cowriting). In fact I think Venditti might be in charge of the GL corner right now, or every one is colaberating on it to plan stories. So maybe you just predicted DC's new business model. But I also tried X-O Manowar with the FCBD issue and wasn't really wowed by it either. Quantum and Woody is the first Valient series thats actually made me want to buy it.
August 30, 2013 9:43 am Thanks @Godzilla. @Cosmo, for me A-Man just keeps churning new surprises all the time along with killer writing. Some months I think "This is cool, but how can anything in here compete with _____ or ______ or even _____". In fact that's what I was thinking last month, until I read the annual and Issue 23(?). BBAAMM! Awesome morning. I tried describing this series to my art teacher and couldn't quite find the right words to. I feel that's the benchmarks to a lot of great series, so good they almost defy short descriptions. Y'know what's bugging me about my list? NO GHOSTBUSTERS!!! That series is fantastic every month. Every month! And it's run for almost 20 issues. It's kept it's quality just as high if not more than TMNT, so that's a glaring oversight to me on myself. Honorable mention won't cut it, it DESERVES a spot on my Top 5. Don't know what to cut from my list to make room tho.
August 30, 2013 9:31 am I agree with @ ghostmann, it had a spectacular first issue so of course alot of people will favor it. As long as Lemire knocks the other 7 out of the park I think Trillium's fans will just grow and grow. I think when it's over we're gonna need a cigarette and "Man, I'll never forgot THAT".
August 29, 2013 9:56 pm I like it too. I'd complain more about costs, but damned if every Micro isn't enjoyable and great anyway.
August 29, 2013 9:51 pm @Sitara119, no clue. It's been awhile since I've even touched a Teen Titans comic. It's weird, I love the shows but rarely get excited about the comics. @Phess1, I would argue that New 52 and Marvel NOW! were the same thing with different means and results. But that's Irrelevant. I remember when the New 52 was divided up in to the Dark, the Light, the Edge, was there a fourth? I don't know if those still exist right now. I like your proposal in theory; except I can't see Morrison handling the cosmic stuff very well. I could be wrong, but I don't think he's ever written GL or shown much interest in that part of the DCU. There's a reason DC uses Geoff Johns like Marvel uses Brian Bendis; they've got the stuff. I don't know what else to call it; they understand the characters, theyre capable writers, and they seem to know good business sense (or at least make money). I don't know that Morrison, Snyder, and Lemire can just be treated like Johns, or that they would even want all that responsibility you're suggesting. Make no mistake, I like your proposal, and I like those creators, and I want DC to succeed. I just feel like there's other factors to consider. To be sure, Snyder and Lemire will grow to be big at DC and will eventually grow into roles reflecting that (this is just my opinion, what I'm predicting based on what I know) but I don't know if they're "there" yet. How long did Hickman work at Marvel before he got handed the reins? Remender before he got the Captain? I think both companies need new blood though, guys with new ideas and ways to push the business forward. In fact if I were you I'd keep an eye on Venditti, he could be the next Snyder. Also, if Snyder, Johns, Morrison, and Lemire are running the 4 corners of the DCU; that would require a ton of newbies in there. Or other established talent coming/returning to DC. I have no love for Bob Harris, drop him. The thing is, the stuff I've seen thus far and described in "Marvel Comics: the Untold Story" sounds like the stuff Jim Shooter was pushing at Marvel. So did him and Harris work close together or something? What's up with that? But if Harris goes, someone needs to come in to replace him. Maybe another Janette Kahn, someone who would push the comics to new markets, readers, media. DC characters need WAAAAYYYY more exposure, that should be their number one priority right now. But that's just my 2 cents.
August 29, 2013 6:54 pm I guess he was getting back at me for something I did (I asked one of my other roommates about it last year after I moved out. I guess first guy just couldn't stand me for some reason. His words: Aggh, I can't stand ######. Just something about him makes me want to... I don't even know. He's the only person to ever get under my skin like that". I swear to this day, I have no idea what I did. Some people though just don't like you for whatever reason). That sounds rough what's happening to you, but I went through the same thing for years during school. This lifestyle comes with sacrifices man. Just act it doesn't bother you (believe me, I know it does). Hell, repeat the jokes. But don't let people see how much it bothers you. Be like DD or Batman, tough and unafraid of sh*t!
