August 19, 2013 3:00 pm I was wondering the same thing (and is 616 Fury now in the Ultimate Universe leading Hydra?).
August 15, 2013 3:22 am Oh, and Jim Cheung is a f**cking god ;)
August 15, 2013 3:22 am I agree with most of you, the book was surprisingly good. I'm usually not a Hickman fan but this was really exciting. And I think it was a great choice to make this an extra long issue, that way Hickman could really set up everything and the next issue can fully dive into the story.
August 15, 2013 3:16 am I read neither New Avengers or Avengers and Infinity #1 was actually very easy t follow. There are some characters like the guy in red with the star on his hand or the one with the huge glowing shoulder pads that I don't know at all, but even Ex Nihilo and Captain Universe were introduced enough to get what's going on. But I'm a little worried. From the graphic at the end it seemed like I have to read the Avengers books now? Because they were in the timeline and the tie-ins were not?
August 13, 2013 5:22 pm Really great review. I always thought I was the only one who doesn't like Hickman. His FF/F4 run was good (but not great), but everything after that wasn't really for me. I sometimes felt that Hickman is somewhat of a shallow Grant Morrison. Both tend to foreshadow and hinting towards larger than life concepts and developments that pay off in the end of a story. But while I always felt that Morrison does so to get some point across (I mean on a metaphorical level) it always seemed to me that Hickman only does so for the sake of plot. All this building up and all his cosmic concepts seemed to be there just for the sake of an "epic" finally. And in general there is nothing wrong with that, especially if the characters are fun and you enjoy the ride. But I never thought his characters where compelling enough to pull me though his run and the payoff in the end was to me often very disappointing (all this became apparent to me in a second reading of FF/F4, which I enjoyed so much less without the excitement of a possible future payoff). The funny thing is that I think Hickman can actually wright pretty interesting and fun moments and characters if he wants to. Especially the FF/F4 issues after all the big fighting were really good (e.g. the issue with old Ben and the final scene with Ben and Read on the couch). I wish he would do more of those great character moments. That being said I will still give infinity a chance. Jm Cheung is just one of my favorite artists. And especially because I read Nova and I heard that there is going to be a tie-in.
August 4, 2013 3:12 pm Great show. I agree so much with Josh about the death of the page. I think comics try to copy film for a long time now. And by zooming in you get even more the feeling of getting the pictures presented in temporal rather than spacial sequences. So the panels really become scenes or frames. And by doing that you loose so many of the great features that only exist in comics. Not only the overall page as a piece of art but stuff like playing with the frame etc. Manapul is for me always a great example for someone who still does play with the page instead of just trying to copy movies. PS: Daredevil was great, my personal pick.
July 24, 2013 3:28 am that young avengers image was brilliant. now i kinda miss the old team ...
July 20, 2013 6:31 pm I'm not sure if I'm excited for this. I absolutely love Little Nemo, but not necessarily because of the story or concept itself. I think Little Nemo was just so great because McCay was an absolute genius. He could have made any story great (and he did ;) ). He did stuff with the medium comic that was so ahead of his time. All these techniques of sequential storytelling that seem so innovative today, he (in most cases) already used (and mostly invented) back then. I think this can be a nice, interesting and fun comic, but taking on McCay's legacy is in my view the biggest challenge in comics. (but Shanower and Rodriguez are a good team so who knows, maybe...)
July 8, 2013 3:27 pm Powers was and is a great series and still holding up! I'm currently rereading the series. (right now I'm at the third TP)
July 1, 2013 1:12 pm the first three or four story-arks of ultimate fantastic four were actually pretty good. and immonen on art is always a plus ;)
