December 20, 2012 3:50 am Satisfying happy ending to the best X-run in years. Sad that I won't be receiving new issues of this each month anymore, but looking forward to Uncanny Avengers picking up remaining threads. Excited for Evan's reunion with Fantomex(es).
November 25, 2012 1:19 am I recommend everyone to listen to Kieron Gillen's "Decompressed" podcast, in particular the episodes featuring Matt Fraction and the "Marvel Method". I believe the lack of dynamism in this issue compared to the previous is due to the fact that this was done in a traditional full script format (Fraction mentioned 3 of the first 4 issues were done via MM), rather than the sprawling freedom afforded to Aja in the first 3. Nonetheless, I've been loving Fraction's plots and dialogue in this book. He gives Hawkeye and Kate great voices. Matt Hollingsworth as well deserves major praise for giving the book such a unique style from anything else in Marvel's repertoire. Clearly Marvel's breakthrough of this year.
November 21, 2012 6:15 am In a week of heavy hitters like Batman and much hyped debuts in All New X-Men and Thor, this, by leaps and bounds, was an easy POTW. I think what I love most about this book is that I can pick it up breeze through it. I attribute this to a number of factors: - Vaughan's realistic, defined voices: Despite being aliens, these characters might as well be based on my neighbours, who coincidentally argue all the time. The idea of a winged alien chick talking with the attitude Patti Smith is like, the greatest thing to me. - Staples' amazing ability to draw realistic facial expressions: The look on Marko's parents as they react to Marko's introduction of Alana... just says everything there is to say about the disgust and shock. - An overall good fucking story that flows beautifully. - Giant alien micro-penis. As a relatively new reader of comics, this is the only book I've felt comfortable enough to venture outside of the Big 2 to read on a consistent basis. It's got the perfect combination of art, socio-politcal allegory and comedy that brought me into the medium in the first place. I can't say enough good things. I'm just happy I took a chance on this book.
November 21, 2012 5:43 am This has the makings of the X-Men title I've been waiting for for years. I dropped Gillen's run following his second arc as I felt it was a bit too happy riding the status quo, seeming largely irrelevant. And Aaron's book, while commendably fresh, just didn't have the level of realism I wanted from my X-titles. I think Bendis has managed to find a new direction while maintaining a mature, Claremont-like style that focuses on personal relationships between the characters. If "Spider-Men" was any indication, the meetings of past and present characters are sure to tug on some heart strings. I think it'll also put a lot of focus on how far characters like Beast, Iceman and Warren have come, even creating a basis for comparing Silver to Modern Age storytelling. Also LOVED the reference to the Lee/Kirby X-Men #8, as well as the AR function that points this out. Prompted me to pull my Masterworks edition out to compare Lee's dialogue with Bendis' amended version in this issue.
November 21, 2012 5:26 am This comment will probably get me some heat on this site, but I found this issue a bit boring. I felt it was a bit too heavy on dialogue and exposition. I know this has sorta been Snyder's style this entire run (which I've enjoyed overall), but it often feels like I'm reading a novel rather than a comic book. Yes, I realize Batman is a detective, and detectives do a lot of talking/thinking, but I always felt that the point of a comic book was to do most of this visually. In this issue at least, I certainly felt that the words slowed the pacing of the story way too much.
November 21, 2012 5:09 am I didn't get into this story until about halfway through and will admit that the "X-Men" prefix definitely didn't set me up for the context of this story. This was not a typical X-Men title. Once I realized what was going on, rereading from the beginning made things much more enjoyable to follow. I don't think it's easy to write for Legion, but Spurrier set the scene very well for a character even the Marvel staff (via AR) admittedly don't know much about. Given the low resolution pencil scans we were treated to in the Marvel NOW! preview from a few weeks back, I expected the art to look rushed, and in my opinion, it did. What I thought made it worse was the inking, with lines a little too coarse, making everything feel a little cheap. Hopefully this improves. However, these covers by Mike Del Mundo are perhaps the best of the entire Marvel Now line-up. This and next month's covers so perfectly capture the character using an unconventional, Sienkiewicz-like style rarely seen in mainstream books. Makes great use of the new centred titles as well. Dropping this for now and may pick up the trade if I hear good things.
November 21, 2012 4:49 am Never been a big Hulk fan, but I'm sampling this because I loved Yu's awesome covers during Aaron's run this year, and I want to see what Waid does.
November 21, 2012 4:45 am I liked #19 but I think I'm using this Frankenstein deal to drop off the series for now. I really enjoyed All-New X-Men last week and think it suits my taste in X-book a little bit more.
November 12, 2012 3:24 am Rot-Grifter, Hawk/Dove and Deathstroke -- Fuck you, Liefeld! Great touch.
