Very disappointed in this book. I love Ellis' work, but the story here didn't work for me.
From the X-Men becoming "Avengers San Francisco" to Armor whining about her name over and over to the general dullness of the story, even Emma's usually enjoyable snark seemed flat.
And the art...gah.
A very enjoyable read, far better than I expected it to be, dispite some questionable historical choices (the army brass wouldn't have let John Wayne anywhere near the front lines if he'd enlisted, and MacArthur wouldn't have let Patton anywhere near the Pacific theater).
A Watcher cameo? Are you F*#king kidding me? Loeb actually sat down and thought that having the Watcher show up was a good hook for this issue?
My local comics store has all the SI stuff on it's own rack. I went in today, picked New Avengers up, skimmed through it and put it back. Then I looked at all the other SI stuff on the rack that's come out this week and realized that I just didn't care anymore.
It truly amazes and irritates me that this comic isn't a lot more popular than it is.
Despite it's original subject matter, a movie Special Effects master, this is an otherwise standard manga, but one that might appeal to fans of the old F/X movie series.
A rather unoriginal premise is lifted by some interesting characters and good dialog. Be warned however that one of the main characters is a 20?something female vampire with the body of a 10-12 year old who spends a lot of the volume topless.
It is like a 90's Image comic, isn't it?
Not the best thing out there, but hardly the worst. I'm enjoying it enough to keep up with it, though the second issue was pretty bad.
Great issue, definitely the best book of the week, if for no other reason than it finally made Dracula into the badass he should have been from the start.
