I think the ability to read the digital comic on the computer will be the thing which pushes more people into digital comics. I know that the idea is outstanding, and would be a huge selling point.

I also have to agree with Conner that a business is there to make the customer happy, and if they would simply go out of business from something like this then I find them to be not very good at the administrative aspect of the hobby. Like others have mentioned, there are a number of other ways to draw customers and make money. Here in Orlando there is a place call "A Comic Shop" and they constantly have events, signings and other amazing concepts for bringing in people. Innovative businesses deserve to survive, while others should fail.

 Overall, I believe this effort by Marvel will not revolutionize anything, but it could be a stepping stone for something that might.

remember instocktrades is also a great place to get some books exceptionally cheap. I got my first Dynamo 5 trade for 6 bucks. Just gotta be a deal hunter.

Brilliant Article. I am in the process of trying to trim some books, because the college budget is onlyl getting tighter. As much as I might hate to not read EVERY tie in and crossover, it is becoming a reality that the creators really need to put in the effort to grab their audience in these economic times.

I also like the point you make about enjoying the quality over the quantity. I am going back through a great deal of my comic collection since I am buying less and find that there is SO MUCH that I have missed in those pages. I think I read comics differently now, noticing the sublte nuances.

First want to wish all of the ifanboys as well as everyone who comes to this site a happy holidays.

After reading this, I have decided to do the following:

1) Write to Kirkman for making college finals tolerable with rereading Invincible and Walking Dead.

2.) Thinking about  rereading Identity Crisis or the first trade of Y The Last Man. Decemberists in the backround of course.

3.) I gave my girlfriend Mouse Guard and she absolutely adored it. This was the other day, so now I am going to try and find the rest of my Winter collection for her.

4.) Today I WILL write the first chapter of a novel I have been working on.

Yeah so I have also never thought anyone else had heard of Strange Matter either. They were far superior to the Goosebump books in my opinion. I have been trying to find them on Amazon or Ebay for a while now, but I usually only can find them in used bookstores.

Great article, I think that people have a hard time grasping the depth of comic books, and their ability to not just convey high flying super heroes, but issues which affect the world we live in. This can be as simple as in the Robin series where he talks a college student down from a roof and there is a suicide hotline at the end of the issue, or something like the Watchmen which is an entire critique on our world.Until people fully understand the medium and what it is capable of, there will be that stigma that comci books are good for very few things, least of which is conveying a complex story of emotions.

 

I personally love reading and writing, and I do aspire to be a comic book writer. I am working on a project at the moment, and it is interesting after reading this to go back and really think about what influenced each individual portion of my writing. Thanks for a great article, keep them coming.
