Benedict Cumberpatch is one of my favorite actors and delivered an incredible performance but it shook me right out of the movie when he was revealed as KNS. I loved the movie but the reveal felt like casting Nick Cage as Luke Cage. I think it would be even cooler if Cumberpatch was John Harrison, ethnically British superman of the Botany Bay crew who brought the ruckus but was stopped by Kirk & Co. That would foreshadow KNS appearing in a later movie making him seem even more fearsome. The only thing I think would have been lost was the gimmick of Spock's primal scream and the glass touching scene.
May 17, 2013 7:43 am I loved it. Cumberpatch's performance gave me chills. His rumbling baritone conveyed pure menace. That being said Hollywood needs to stop casting white actors as obviously ethnic characters.
June 10, 2012 8:58 pm The writing is much more sophisticated today than it was in the 30's, 40's and 50's. Now you can sit back and read a comic from the 50's and think "Ok, the bad guy isn't actually a mustache twirling idiot he's just been repeatedly mind-wiped by the justice league whenever they figured out a hero's secret identity" or "The reason freaking Stilt-man is using a multimillion dollar suit to rob a bank of $100k is the super villain industry is heavily subsidized by Dr Doom as a form of terrorism against the US." Is it even realistic to believe that none of your old time favorite superheros were gay or bi? Heck Wonder Woman grew up on an island entirely populated by women! It's not like the writers would have even had the freedom to be honest about it thanks to the Comics Code Authority.
June 1, 2012 4:39 am I'm sure a few of the golden age hero's were gay. It's not like they'd be able to come out back then so maybe some of the comics code authority's rigidly gentlemanly behavior of the 40's and 50's can be reinterpreted.
