SEVERED #6 (OF 7)
January 11, 2012 7:06 pm I've cursed aloud some choices made by artists and writers on books before ("Really?.. REALLY?") but this issue marks the first time I've EVER screamed at a fictional character.
"GO! GET OUT! COME ON--*"
I slapped both hands over my mouth. Did that just happen?
Then I looked at the book. Did THAT just happen?
My pick of the week. I've been totally sucked into the world.

Any Cover You Can Do, Dave Johnson Can Do Better
November 21, 2011 3:29 pm Considering Severed as a suspense story beneath a period piece, I prefer Futaki's. The pastel hues (opposed to Johnson's grit) do more to serve the story's escalating tension, rather than depicting the book as outright gore-horror. Futaki's cover teases the monster lurking beneath the surface of a optimistic era (when you could more easily trust a stranger) and fits the tone of the book FAR better for me.
On the same note, I remember the bear trap scene FAR more vividly than the gorey reveal of the first victim.

My Digital Comics Manifesto
October 25, 2011 1:50 pm I donate my old comics to local schools and community reading programs.
I send books home with friends and discuss them the next week over a pint.
When it comes to resale, I've had an overwhelming success on sites like Kijiji.
I can't do any of these digitally.
This doesn't mean that I don't want to go digital. The free-space argument is valid, as is the crispness on a tablet, but as a reader and writer I buy my books in print out of a love of reading - and a desire to share that.
