Bio: Hello, I'm what you call a geek *gasp*, yes, it's true... What's that? I'm among friends now? awesome, then let me share my origin story with you! I've been reading manga for years now (started buying them regularly about 9 years ago), started off with the regular dragon ball, as time went on and as I matured I wanted something more... About a year or two ago, I started reading comics for the first time, (my brother had bought me an avengers comic book from way back during their first "event" with the skrull, but I was like 8 years old and didn't know what I had in my hands back then) and it was just what I wanted, namely; like nothing else I had experienced. Several characters from different independent books all sharing one universe? It was all new to me, and I was loving it! Growing up in Sweden, I had a somewhat sheltered life from American comic books, hell even manga was almost impossible to track down until the big manga "boom" of. But with no friends to share my passion with, and thus no Community to allow my new found interest to thrive in, it was instead extinguished. I had limited funds for buying comics, and with only one store in the whole city that qualifies as anything close to a "comic book store" I ended up giving up on the life-style. I ended up studying natural science, this path of geek-dom eventually lead me to Revision3, and after a month I finally noticed the banner with three comic books, each with eyes peering out from above them. Little did I know that clicking the banner would change my life. Well, actually, I didn't click the banner... It took another month before I had decided to expand my horizons by checking out Ifanboy. After that, I decided to pick up comics again, but ended up focusing exclusively on DC this time (by now I had become a huge fan of smallville and had simply gravitated towards their universe rather than Marvel). But one of them Ifanboys must has hypnotic powers because each time they brought up these new topics/comics, I felt like I should be out there, as if I kept on getting that speech that Morpheus gave Neo about how he lives in a computer and that there's a whole other world out there. So that's what lead me back to starting to read marvel, and even try out stuff from Image (Invincible) and even loads of dark horse (buffy, hellboy) and other must reads (loved watchmen)... And well, now I'm part of the Ifanbase too, and as long as I keep enjoying comics (don't see that changing) then I'm going to keep staying.
@stuclach: Right on! Their debate made me think about it too. Also made me think about which cases I would felt something closer to my subjective idea of a retcon(and to what degree) or a reboot would have been prefered in the treatment of certain characters. Personally I've really enjoyed the recent hawkman stuff I've read, though I am aware that there has been a whole lot of mess in his backstory. @TheNextChampion: I don't wanna tell you what to do... But I will. LIGHTEN UP. Don't make me link you to Josh's "negativity is too damn high!" article, because if you force my hand, I will. ;P
I partly see your point in that you you seem to have been expecting or would have liked an episode of just straight down breakdowns of reboots and 'compare & contrast' between marvel/DC maybe?
But their disscussion illustraits that it isn't clear cut in that manner, and they do nonetheless cover the 'compare & contrast' between the big too and the way they have treated/implimented reboots and how often.
@JAMESDEAN2020 It's the panels of the week, if you're reading somehting this week, and that something has panels in them, as comics tend to do, then expect spoilers ;p
@muddi900: No, that might be Claymore that you're thinking of... Berserk is this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserk_%28manga%29 -- @JesTr, @TomE: I believe they're picking up the anime once again! Though not as a series but rather as a Anime Theatrical release movie in an attempt to eventually cover the whole story. Likely similar to whats being done with Evangelion.
@MrHyde,
Never got too far into love hina, I enjoyed it, (As you pointed out, most geeks can relate to some of the situations, and if not; they're plain hilarious anyway)but it felt a bit like the main characters quest to track down his childhood friend was going nowhere at times, without any clear focus for the plot, I found myself uninterested eventually.
Though I think that the creator seems to have learnt from this and made a manga superior in pretty much all ways. "Negima!" the new manga (well, it's gone past 200 chapter/issues by now...) has a solid storyline and offers lots of laughs. The story can be explained as a mix of awkward (of the non-creepy variety) school situations with a unique twist + harry potter; The main character is a young teacher at an all girls school (What, you're already leaving to buy it now? :P) which turns out to be a front for a community of mages. It's got lots of light and entertaining bits in the beginning but also offers a rich fantasy story, suitable for young teens and up I would say... Give it a read if you can track it down.I was rather pleasantly surprised by the suggestions by the Ifanbase, I assumed that you guys would go for the mainstream shonen-jump series (naruto/onepiece, maybe DBZ) but instead you go and impress a fella with distinct manga's like death-note! The mind-games are both a refreshing change from American comics that are heavy on standard punch-action (I'm generalising) and also different from many other generic manga formula's.
'TheNextChampion', "... story just streched waaay to much". You're so right! After committing myself to Deathnote for 90 chapters (there are a total of 111 including chapter "0") i could no longer carry on, *spoiler alert* after L died the cat and mouse chase ended and that's where I kind of felt like part of the story died with that character. It was their chemistry that had made all the witty writing work and what compelled me to care about what happened...
