I had ZERO desire to pick this book up. I’m not all that invested in a vampires vs mutants story-line; it just feels like there’s too much chocolate on my pizza. Two great tastes that really don’t taste great together.

However, in the spirit of Tom Katers’ article “Go Hug A Comic Book Artist,” I wanted to at least see what was being offered up. The standard cover does absolutely nothing for me, but I open the book and there is every reason in the world to give any book a chance: CHRIS BACHALO!!!

So, you’ve got me at this point, but here’s where I loose you. I’m a Gambit fan! I’ll take my 7 “Our Fathers” and 5 “Hail Marys” now. Unfortunately, he’s represented here in a nearly pointless roll. He’s supposed to be on the mission as an expert thief, but that never really comes into play, mostly just hanging off Storm in a creepy perv kind of way. Yes, I get that that’s been his schtick forever, but I can hope for better.

That aside, there’s nothing really wrong with the story. I moves along nicely and has a few great character moments that make it all worth while. Emma complaining about the UV blasts giving her tan lines is excellent and Northstar saying “Go team Jacob” as the vampires explode is just pure entertainment. However, the idea of a vampire machine running off human blood, isn’t that from the first BLADE movie? And didn’t he have his own issue out this week?

But my god that art is beautiful.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
