This book ties in with the Heroic Age and concequently, the Secret Avengers. Yes, Moon Knight’s first* mission since becoming a member of the Secret Avengers is here as they tackle a pirate team lead by captain barracuda who commenders an oil tanker, which immediately seems very Un-Avengers like. I mean, in their main book they are on mars so shouldn’t they have better things to do than fight pirates? In saying that, they are very nasty pirates with some kind of mythical glove so I guess that calls for an undercover, spec-ops team…?

Anyhoo… the story isn’t that bad, yes it was a bit far-fetched but well executed and consistent. Moon Knight’s narration is definitely Moon Knight – “I wear white so they can see me coming, but tonight I only care about one thing: winning” that sounds like something he’s say. Here you see the Secret Avengers come together, how they fight, how the team works and that is great. We also get a little banter between Moon Knight and Ant Man and that will be great to see develop.

Now then… this comic has some STUPID stuff going on, and I mean really stupid. There is one scene where Moon Knight is all ‘we’ve gotta go in stealthy’ and in the same panel Valkyrie is riding a flying white horse and although this is adressed by Moon Knight, it still seems silly to have when “you’re gonna want to go in dark.” Also, War Machine comes flying in which can’t be very quiet especially when he leaves a huge smoke trail behind him.

Finally, the art by Juan Jose Ryp is, in my opinion, awful. Faces look deformed, hair is just wrong, Steve Rogers looks like he’s got a boner and Beast’s ass is TIGHT. And when skydiving, Beast looks like he crouching in mid-air, there is just no motion. Steve looks like he flying like Superman and Moon Knight is reaching out for something while he has this stupid-looking metal thing stuck to his back with some stupid little wheels on the end. And when people get obliterated by the Glove of Asteria they look like dog food, not flesh ripping from bones. It’s all just wrong. But the cover by Franchesco Mattina is beautiful and is by far my favorite out all of the books I bought. It’s painted style is fantastic and really gives the book a (false) white-knuckle, edgy kind of vibe.

So, The story is a little far-fetched but well executed and the art is atrocious but the cover is stunning and therefore I’m going to give this book a 1.5/5. It’s a shame because I really want to like this book, it just seems like they don’t want me to and is nothing like Secret Avengers.

Story: 1 - Poor
Art: 1 - Poor
