This is an incredibly difficult book to review in single chunks, as it fits the Vertigo "wait for the trade" paradigm so perfectly. It's almost as if it was pitched that way, to be the next Sandman or the next Fables, so well does it follow in their veins. Still, we find ourselves in the middle of an arc that seems to be picking up pace nicely. London braces itself for the release of the new Tommy Taylor novel and we are treated of scenes reminiscent of the old Harry Potter midnight releases we would see here a few years back. Meanwhile the various particpants of the overall literary conspiracy plot barrel steadily towards each other. Savoy and Tommy plan to be in attendance to see if Wilson might turn up, Lizzie decides what her next move will be, while Pullman and his employers plot to move against the friends.
I don't know if people are still reading this, or whether they're just trade waiting, as I hear very little talk about it. It's a shame if they gave up as it strikes me as a rare thing, the literary thriller. Rather than be a Potter pastich, it's got more to say about the phenomenon of those books rather than the plots themselves. At the same time it's becoming more and more of a convincing and gripping adventure of it's own, with original ideas and concepts, all of Carey's own invention. There's a steady unveiling of answers, but at the same time there's plenty of mystery to keep you guessing, and I'm genuinely keen to see how it all pieces together.
I don't find the art spectacular, but I find it does a good job. It tells the story well, and is detailed enough that everything is clear to the reader. I do however love the covers, and this latest is no exception, depicting Tommy adrift in a sea of suspicious looking Taylor fans.
I find myself hoping that enough people are still buying this book to keep it going. I heard recently about just what plans Josh Dysart had for Unknown Soldier before the cancellation and it's heartbreaking to find out what we would have seen. I really hope that Carey gets the time to tell this story, as it's truly one worth reading to the end.
