Johnathan Hickman leaves big shoes to fill. (personal opinion, of course. I'm a fanatically crazed fan of his Ultimates run, Fantastic Four, FF, and Manhattan Projects) I envy no man who had to follow that crazy arc with The City and the Children of Tomorrow.
However, I feel like Sam Humphries knows that now we have Iron Man, Thor, and Cap back together we don't need uncertainty, crazy science-fiction world threats....we need them to just kick ass. Especially in this Divided We Fall event. Issue 13 felt very promising, but this issue landed with a thud. The writing felt pretty strong just like the last issue, but the ART.....was just.....so inconsistent. I'm not a huge fan of Billy Tan, but compared to the last issue I really expected better. Some of the facial expressions were just ugly, like Thor's face when confronting the The New Republic of Texas' government. In earlier pages Iron Man's armor is smooth, sleek, slightly pudgy and towards the end of the book, when flying the poor nameless guy into outer space, his armor looks shinier, with harsher ridges, and skinny robot fingers.
This was not a fun book to look at. I really feel Sam Humphries can do some fun things with the Ultimates, but he needs some better artists (or at least, more cinematic, and consistent artists) to complement his writing.
Also, the AR app shows a quick snippet of Humphries thoughts on where Cap's head is at during this event...in case you were curious
