Do you love stories about a lonesome hero on a quest to redeem the sins of his past? You do? Then you'll love this issue of "Transformers Spotlight"!
Our story opens in a spaceport, somewhere in the universe. A masked man is completing a deal with a local crime queen, a pair of card-keys being the prize. Card-keys that will help him gain access to a an incoming Decepticon space-ship. As the masked man departs, the crime queen comments on how wherever Cybertronians go, death and destruction follow. She advises him to stay away from them, but the man politely refuses. The criminal tries to get him to stay and discovers he is a Cybertronian as well. The masked man is the star of this issue, Drift!
Drift gains entry and prepares to free some Autobots being held inside. He is about to liberate the captives when the wall explodes! In walks Kup and a squad of Autobots, possibly the Wreckers. A firefight breaks out in the brig, and amidst the battle, Springer and Kup debate who Drift is, noting the long sword on his back. Perceptor even notes how Drift's newly upgraded form is of old design but new tech all at the same. Kup recruits him to their mission and Drift offers to take point. After freeing their comrades, the Autobots prepare to escape when an energy blast tears Perceptor apart. It is the Decepticon leader, Turmoil, sporting a cannon that Megatron would envy. As Drift tries to save Perceptor, Turmoil recognizes him, calling him a traitor. He unleashes another blast from his arm-cannon, separating Kup & Drift from the rest of the team.
As they recover, Kup questions Drift about who he really is. It turns out Drift was once known as Deadlock, a notoriously brutal Decepticon warrior. Kup then relates the tale of an unknown 3rd faction in the Great War, a "faction against factions" he offers. They all disappeared, Kup says, or so he thought, noting Drift's long sword once more. Drift confirms Kup's suspicions, he left the 'Cons over what he did to this other group of Cybertronians. The old timer offers the troubled warrior a second chance because he saw how Drift tried to save Perceptor, even though he didn't know him. They then set off to destroy the ship.
After confirming Springer and the others have escaped, Drift programs the ship to fly into space and self-destruct. Turmoil bursts in just as they prepare to leave. Drift kicks Kup out of the ship and prepares to face his former commander, proclaiming Deadlock is dead. Drawing his swords, Drift dodges blaster fire and pins Turmoil to the wall. Turmoil eggs Drift to kill him, saying he is nothing but a killer, it's what he is there to do. Drift responds that he knows what he has to do. In a series of action panels that lets us know artist Casey Coller watched a lot of action movies growing up, Drift races through the ship, rescues Perceptor and escaped just as it blows sky high!! Cut to the Autobot ship, Springer has informed the high command that all six Autobot hostages have been retrieved. Seven Autobots, Kup corrects him as he offers Drift a slot on his team. Springer objects, but Kup reminds him war is more than killing and everyone deserves a second chance.
I loved this new issue. Ever since Drift debuted a few issues agaon in "All Hail Megatron", I have wondered who the 'samurai' Autobot was. The fact he uses blades, not blasters, made me a fan instantly. Shane McCarthy is the writer on this issue and he evokes elements of '80s action movies and old school samurai flicks in equal measure with this story of a wounded warrior and his quest for redemption. Casey Coller is on his way to equalling Don Figueroa as the number one TF artist, with crisp and clean art that is just beautiful! Another home run for my favorite title about autonomus robotic organisms from the planet Cybertron!!
