Oh boy The Strain. This is a book I recently picked up the first two issues of saying "wow this may turn out amazing, hey look Guillermo Del Toro, it must be good!" well I was right. The Strain was quickly added to my pull list and I was happy with my purchase. Which is why it pains me to say that after only the 3rd issue I can't justify paying 3.50 for this when great books like Fatale and 30 Days of Night need to fill my horror quota. The issue itself is not bad though it just doesn't have the kick that the first two issues had for me. David Lapham continues a slow burn buildup in this series finally showing us the vampires themselves and boy are they messed up. Huddleston continues to have a quirky style that makes the more horrific imagery all the more powerful. Now without going too far into spoiler territory lets just say that the book does well with building up the story even farther in this 3rd issue. Now with all of that said your asking "why did you say that you are going to drop it then?" well the answer is very simple "its not enough". This is a Solid book but its only solid. The fact of the matter is that the book is slow and a decompressed story is fine but while the first 2 issues were dark and foreboding in their buildup (much like Guillermo del Toro's films) this issue is much more bombastic in its presentation instead of slow and methodical. In short we need more "pick pick pick" and less vampire penis (also overt topless women for no reason other than to have them.....REALLY CLASSY guys)
