Back in 2002, I started reading the Ultimate Marvel line. Automatically I thought "Man this is going to be great when DC does it." Sadly, DC opted not to do an Ultimate-esque line. Don't get me wrong, DC responded with the All Star line but is more like Marvel Knights then Ultimate. My thirst for Ultimate DC was left unquenched until 2007 when Ion #9 & #10 sported a different cover dress and starred different versions of Atom, Flash, and Green Lantern. After that I researched the existence of a line of comics created by Dan Jurgens in 1997 called Tangent it seemed that DC had a almost Ultimate line. I bought Tangent Comics Vol. 1 & 2 TPB (2 being better then 1) and hoped for a resurgence.
Which brings me to this maxiseries, Tangent is back and will probably go away as quick as it came. This book starts with you needing to read Tangent TPB's, Ion #9 & #10, and JLA #16 to even understand whats going on. There is a 2 page Tangent history lesson in the back but still isn't enough. Dan Jurgens messed up making this maxiseries not accessible to new readers which will drop sales and Tangent will die off again.
This first issue is a first issue, not much happens. Tangent Flash wants to go home and enlists the help of Earth 1 Flash and GL (Stewart) to retrieve Tangent GL's lantern which is in JLA HQ. The Tangent Universe (Earth 9) is in shambles, Tangent Superman rules the Tangentverse, Tangent Joker is on parole and has seemingly retired from being Joker, and Tangent Manhunter is on a quest to find the captured Tangent Atom.
If you are a Tangent fan this is a must but I can't recommend to new readers because of the learning curve. Hopefully, this series picks up and I can put my foot in my mouth but I believe this will fall away and won't be remembered. All in all, I still have a need for an Ultimate DCU.

I have some fond memories of the Tangent universe from back in the day. When I went a reread some of the issues I had recently it reminded me that sometimes you just can’t go back.
I flipped through this issue and was completely disinterested. It’s a line that I was almost shocked to be brought back. I agree if it’s going to be done it should at least be done right so that other new people may enjoy it.
