George Perez’s Superman is a comic out of its place in time–the storytelling here just doesn’t hold up to the more complex stories contemporary readers expect. Building a long arc from a series of issues in the villain-of-the-month mentality is a unique and exciting idea (it’s most of the reason I’m still on board), but the execution has been poor, relying mostly on heavy-handed foreshadowing and spooky, villainous pow-wows.

This comic would have been fine in a bygone era, but an older and (possibly) more literate readership demographic demands more intelligent storytelling. Simplicity doesn’t have to be a bad thing; rather, Superman just needs a more capable craftsman than Perez in creative control.

  1. Thanks for confirming that I was right to drop this after the first issue. I had the same comment about it…

I’ll gladly jump on board when Jurgen and Giffen will lead the charge!
