OK, this is a weird story, and perhaps one of the quirkier ones Warren Ellis has come up with for Avatar: Instead of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons, the world governments invest their war machine effort in creating gods to fight each other. Since this series’ release has been scattered to the four winds, I don’t think anyone could tell you exactly what happened through the five issue arc, but suffice it to say, the Garrie Gastonny art is gorgeous, and Elli’s mondo-beyondo concept is brilliant and well-conceived (an astronaut mushroom deity!), even if the actual execution is a bit arcane. Maybe it’ll read better in a trade, as a companion to “Ignition City,” “Captain Swing,” or “Crecy.”
